James William Hickam Sr. 76, a former Penn Railroad section foreman, died at home in Worthington after a short illness. Born December 23, 1880 in Bristol Tennessee, he lived in Worthington many years and was a church member. Survived by son James W. Hickam Jr. and grandson James W. Hickam III, both of Las Vegas. Funeral home services scheduled Friday at 2 p.m. with Rev. H. W. Wooldridge officiating.
A tenement blaze on Chicago’s South Side killed two boys about six years old and injured four others. A man aged 58, Arthur Ashley, jumped from a third story window and survived. Claude Mitchell 54, his wife Lucy 48, and John Ewell 42 were also hurt. The two alarm fire began under a back stairway and may have been started by an arsonist.
Former Indiana Governor Henry F Schricker, 73, rested comfortably at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis after a slight stroke. He was hospitalized Tuesday after illness at his office, with the hospital reporting a good night and a fair condition. Schricker, Indiana’s only two time governor, previously led the state Democrat Party and served as Hoosier chief executive during 1941-45 and 1949-53.
Indiana Supreme Court denied Leslie Irvin a new trial saying he was a fugitive when his appeal was filed. Mrs. Grace Pope 62 retired teacher and Linton resident died Tuesday at Freeman-Green County Hospital after a brief stay. She was born September 30 1894 near Linton widow of Russell Pope married May 15 1921 and survived by son Wallace Pope grandsons two brothers and five sisters. Burial is set at Fairview cemetery with services at the formed church Friday at 2 p.m. officiated by Revs Bredeweg and Kratzat.

The Commerce Department reports 1956 personal income rose to a record 325 billion dollars, up about 19 billion from 1955. Wages and salaries increased about 7 percent, despite a 17 percent auto production slump. The Census Bureau also notes a record 12.5 billion dollars in imports for 1956, up from 11.4 billion in 1955.

Neale Harvey, 60, of Shirley died when his car hit the rear of a truck on Ind 234 west of New Castle. Passenger John Ray, 60, also of Shirley, was injured in the Tuesday crash.
A gas leak caused three blasts in Reno near First and Sierra streets. Two people died, 42 injured, and five major buildings were destroyed as Nevada National Guardsmen evacuated an eight-block area. Local officials blamed an underground gas main leak and warned residents to avoid the area.
Two Jasonville men, Fred Burton and James Burton, both held on $1,000 bond, confessed to stealing heavy scale beams from a mine near the Greene Sullivan line west of Linton. The beams, about 200 pounds each, were cut up for a Sullivan county junk dealer for $10.25. The case was filed in Greene circuit court by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney James Sparks.
Greene circuit court at Bloomfield considered three civil cases with two new filings. Tuesday a petition to modify the Baker divorce was heard, granting custody of two older children to the father and two younger to the mother, with $54.50 monthly support for the two younger children. Jonas L. Byers and James L. Mason were granted divorces from Helena Byers and Mabel Mason respectively. New filings include Turner duel against Grubb for account damages and a $680.44 claim by Raymond J. Cardinal connected to a Feb 6, 1955 accident at state road 54 and U S Highway 41, south of Sullivan.
Dr Dallas West executive secretary of the Indiana Baptist convention explains the Lay Development program sponsored by the American and Indiana Baptist conventions at a 7:00 pm meeting tomorrow night at the First Baptist Church. Rev Royden Rea states the program benefits all area Baptist churches.

French forces claim 36 rebels killed at Bou Saada and Tablat with no losses announced. The general strike waned as shops and ports reopen nationwide. A correctional tribunal fined and jailed Arabs for defying French orders during the strike.
A bandit posing as a customer robbed the Commonwealth Loan Co. in Hammond Indiana and escaped with 1159 dollars after forcing clerk Donna Orr and customer Abel King to the floor. He ordered manager Thomas J. Collins to open drawers and took the money.
