UPI reports the Angels of Bataan, hospital nurses held at Santo Tomas civilian camp in Manila, were liberated. Lieutenant Eleanor Garen of South Bend and Nurse Eileen Allen were among those freed, with joy dampened by earlier hard times and the surprise of antibiotics and supplies on hand.
A Greene County Tuberculosis Association spokesman says reminder post cards go out this week to Stockton Township residents who have fallen behind on donations during wartime efforts. The group is within a couple hundred dollars of its quota and expects a strong response, noting other townships have already donated well.
Miners at the Staunton Pits of the Ayrshire Collieries Corporation reported a 16 foot seam of No 3 bituminous coal as the largest ever uncovered in Indiana Views across the Indiana block and bituminous fields typically run three to eight feet but extent unknown as the seam was found yesterday in light drilling
S. C. Roeder stated today that Operators predicted a heavy increase in the Ayrshire tipple around here to see a robin. He noted the bird as the first sign of spring seen in his own yard.
Mrs Jack Scherer underwent a tonsillectomy this morning. A girl weighing 8 pounds 10 ounces was born to Mrs Wadis Reinties on Saturday. Mrs John Weaver of Linton route 1 was admitted for treatment Monday afternoon. Harley Gee of Hobbieville was admitted Monday with a fractured knee cap. A boy weighing 7 pounds 6 ounces was born to Mrs Robert L Flory this morning and named Robert Lester Jr. A Caesarean birth today to Mrs Norma Rhodes of Linton route 1 produced a 7 pound 13 ounce baby. Walter Glaspie of Jasonville was dismissed this morning. Mrs Charles Goodman was dismissed Monday evening. Mrs Leon Perry was taken home Monday.
James H. Stevens died at his home southeast of Linton at five this morning after a two week illness. Born August 5, 1875 he was 69 years old. Survivors include widow Bessie Stevens a daughter Adville Alkire of Linton a son Lester Stevens of St. Louis and a brother Jess. The body goes to Newkirk Funeral Home and burial will be in Pleasant Grove Cemetery after a two o’clock Thursday service at Pleasant Grove Church.
Funeral services for George Stevens will be held at Olive Branch Baptist Church Thursday at 2 PM with Rev. Irvin Gates officiating. Interment follows in Olive Branch Cemetery.
U P dispatches report American Third Army breaking through the Siegfried line in Schnee Eifel and closing on Prum along an eight mile front. Patton’s divisions gain a mile or more while Colmar pocket is cut off and Rhine bridges come under fire. Thousands of German troops retreat across the Rhine and many are trapped in the Vosges mountains.
Capt. E. S. Root announces naval officer procurement interviews in Terre Haute on Thursday February 8 with Lieut. John W. Bornhoeft Jr USNR. Candidates 19 to 50 with degrees or equivalent engineering experience may interview for engineering, radar, Sea Bee, ordnance and other officer billets.
Manila reports three American divisions tightening grip on Japanese holdouts as Gen. MacArthur proclaims the fall of Manila and vows to push toward Tokyo. Allied leaders convene in London while questions swirl over Soviet participation and war aims.
Dr M E Tomak has been designated by the CAA to perform examinations for pilots. The appointment qualifies him to give physical examinations for obtaining and renewing pilot certificates. The move is part of CAA plans to make such examinations available to all communities.
A morning collision between the tanker Spring Hill, the Liberty ship Bernard Carter, and the Norwegian tanker Divi sparked a blaze in New York Harbor. Flames rose over 100 feet as lifeboats burned. at least seven crew members died and about 60 were hospitalized.
