In Indianapolis a mother of seven, Catherine Robbins 35 and her husband Perry 30, were freed by a juvenile court order after promising to pay toward their son's support in a private institution. Judge Harold Fields noted contempt for failing to pay 21 dollars weekly in welfare support and 1200 dollars back. A later hearing will set the exact weekly amount. The case prompted a special House committee to review possible remedial legislation.

In the southeast Atlantic, Air Force and Coast Guard aircraft along with Tarawa carrier planes search for a converted B29 bomber missing with 12 men after a weather recon flight. The Japanese freighter Kochu Naru reported seeing a burning plane at 6 40 a m CST near Bermuda to New York, but heavy seas ended the search after two hours.
Indiana Senate considers SB 154 to reduce required professional education hours for teachers and shift to subject matter focus. The hearing drew attention from educators including Harriet Stout and Elizabeth Rawls as supporters warn current methods training is excessive. The House also plans rapid action on HB66 and HB6 for reform and repeal of right to work, with Democrats signaling support if repeal language is dropped.
South Bend's Town & Country Co. plans a $500000 damage suit against Teamsters Local 364 in St Joseph Superior Court to halt picketing and alleged threats. The move follows union charges of firings tied to organizing and a prior NLRB unfair labor practices complaint. A Feb. 12 NLRB hearing on those charges was set.
Indiana House approves two bills to repeal the right to work statute and to reform unions. The repeal passes 72 to 23 and the reform measure 69 to 28 with eight Democrats opposing. Debates run over two hours as lawmakers trade charged rhetoric about compulsory unionism and labor protections.
Indiana Supreme Court allowed Virgil Red Smith and Robert A. Peak an additional 90 days to file appeal transcripts in the Madison Avenue Expressway funding case. The former highway chairman and his Milan lawyer ally were convicted of conspiring to embezzle public funds during Gov. George N. Craig’s era. Justices cited slow transcript completion as reasons for the extension.
In a Moscow speech Khrushchev invites President Eisenhower to visit the Soviet Union as a step toward thawing Cold War tensions He denounces U S policy and calls out the administration for ignoring the thaw while touting Soviet missiles and the need for faster end to the conflict The speech was delivered to the 21st Congress of the Soviet Communist Party.
The House is poised to approve a four year extension of the draft and authority to draft doctors and dentists. Rep. Carl Vinson leads debate urging no change as the draft expires June 30. Some push for a two year limit, but the full House is expected to back the four year measure.
Charles Fisher of Linton underwent major surgery yesterday at the West Tenth Street Veterans Hospital in Indianapolis and is listed as a patient in room 07.
Greene county joins the nation in February Heart Month with a month long drive for the American Heart Association. Luncheon plans outlined by Mrs. Charles Marguson cover fundraising, organizing committees, and distribution of heart shaped containers. Attendees include Mrs. Marguson and several local chairmen. postal mail contributions encouraged to Mrs. Henry R. Taylor in Linton.
State representative William Herring of Greene County voted in favor of repealing the right to work law and supporting the union reform bill. The union reform measure passed with 69 Democrats and one Republican backing the change, removing what supporters described as all harmful labor aspects.
