State and federal mine inspectors moved into Bishop, Virginia, seeking the cause of an earth shaking explosion that entombed 37 men. Officials from Pocahontas Fuel Co said the blast killed workers early Monday. rescue teams recovered bodies amid smoke and gas as 111 men were underground.
A 11 600 ton Liberian freighter S S Nortuna with 35 crew was located after hours of air and sea patrols near the Florida Straits. Coast Guard and Navy units reported the ship was not in immediate danger despite earlier garbled distress signals.
Flood danger grows as hundreds leave homes in Mississippi along the Tombigbee. Oostanaula risks serious floods in Georgia and Alabama. Crests near flood stage expected on the Mississippi and Tennessee borders with Paducah possible as the Ohio joins the Tennessee. Red Cross chief warns of far greater damage than initial reports and projects over $2 million in emergency relief. first damage estimates exceed $1 billion.
The International Paper Sales company of Montreal announces a $4.00 per ton price increase for newsprint effective March 1. The adjustment, about three percent, aims to offset rising costs since their 1955 price change.
Indiana State Conservation Director Edwin Marlin announced Outdoor Indiana will restart as a state funded magazine on July 1. President Eisenhower named new postmasters for Dugger Newberry and Oaktown and 28 other Indiana towns. Nominations sent to the Senate yesterday include Guy E. Edds for Dugger Frances L. Autrey for Newberry and Ray E. Mellick for Oaktown, all replacing retiring officials.
In Franklin Indiana a newly married couple Lewis Hyden 23 and Joyce Hyden 19 were found dead in a sealed apartment. Coroner Walker Maguire estimates they died about 24 hours earlier from asphyxiation possibly due to a space heater and inhaled gas fumes.
Mr and Mrs William C Bones now reside in San Francisco California after moving from Tucson Arizona He works for the U S Department of Justice and is assigned to Alcatraz prison Mrs Bones formerly Rosemary Mirabel and the couple are former Linton residents They are parents of Beverly Ann and Johnny Paul.
In Moscow the Supreme Soviet opened sessions with top government and party leaders present for a major foreign policy debate. The agenda includes an amended five year plan and the 1957 state budget as more than 350 deputies attend the Council of Nationalities meeting.
Former President Hoover warned at the National Reconstruction Conference that inflation and heavy government spending signal a new economic downturn. He cited concerns about pressure groups and warned that if inflation rises, the country could face a deeply depressed mood and lasting economic harm. Eisenhower cited Hoover for his public service.
Carey Phifer 48 of Elwood was killed when a tank truck stalled on a highway near Elwood Indiana before dawn. James E Barton 18 and his wife Mary 18 of Huntington were injured in the crash as Phifer’s car struck the truck and Barton’s car struck Phifer’s vehicle. The injured were taken to Mercy Hospital.
W. Martin of Linton is reported to be recovering satisfactorily today after undergoing surgery at Union Hospital in Terre Haute. He is in Room No. 502.
The U S S Nautilus Captain Eugene P Wilkinson announced a historic 20000 league mark aboard the world first atomic submarine off the Atlantic ledge at 8 30 p m A cake cutting with Pink frosted inscription followed as 95 crew members 17 other Navy men and 12 newsmen attended the 21 hour overnight cruise to celebrate the milestone.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles said the United States expects Israel to honor the United Nations resolution calling for a speedy withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the Gulf of Aqaba. He stated no sanctions are planned and praised Israel's respect for world opinion. The briefing also notes Egypt’s expected compliance with UN actions and mentions Indiana politics amid criticism of former Gov Craig’s administration.
Greene County Board of Supervisors imposed a seven ton gross load limit on county highways due to soft road conditions and truck damage reports. They also made eleven courthouse holidays including New Year’s, Lincoln’s Birthday, and Veterans Day, plus all election days.

Three Franklin Indiana men die in a crash near Lafayette Georgia when a three place single engined plane crashes into a cow pasture north of Costenin Town airport. Victims are John Alfred Starkey 25 Robert E Glidden 29 and Richard Lee Neitael 20. Plane was bound for Florida to retrieve Glidden s damaged aircraft. Bodies taken to a Franklin funeral home.
Armed troops and tanks patrolled Port au Prince as a second general strike pressured the unpopular president. The action led to the resignation of Joseph Nemours Pierre Louis, with seven candidates in the pending general election as leaders seek a provisional president to end the paralysis.
