Greene County reduces precincts from 74 to 59 affecting the May 4 election. Six voting booths per precinct will curb crowding. County Clerk Frank Lenning to mail voter notices and oversee transfer of registration cards to reflect changes. Bi partisan committee praised for harmony while saving about 4000 dollars per year.
Vincennes Indiana plans for a flood control project to ease danger from the Wabash River are being prepared by the army engineers. Mayor Betz said blueprints will be drawn up after a conference with the district engineer in Louisville. Construction likely begins after July 1, 1949, with two sections a flood wall on the north and protection works in the east and south areas.
The Indianola Club will meet at the home of Mrs. Rosa Von derschmitt at 7 30 this evening. All members are urged to attend.
Radio Moscow reports Russia and Romania signed a 20 year mutual aid treaty aimed at countering aggression from Germany and other states. Molotov said the pact binds both nations to immediate military and other assistance, with automatic five year renewals and Balkan state cohesion influencing wider regional treaties. Signed in the Kremlin with Stalin and Groza present after days of negotiations.
Bloomington Masons invite members from Lawrence Greene Monroe Martin and Orange counties to a February 9 8 pm entertainment at Indiana University Alumni hall Union building. The Footlighters will perform Summer Comes to the Diamonds with C Winfield Hunt directing. Former umpire Harry Geisel will share baseball anecdotes and the program ends with a musical performance and refreshments.
Ira Corbin and John M. Corbin file a complaint in Bloomfield’s Greene circuit court against Theodore Done seeking an accounting over an alleged $200 debt for goods merchandise and rent of land furnished to the defendant from 1945 through 1947 inclusive.
Mrs. Cora A. Robinson, 82, died at 11 p.m. Wednesday at the home of her son Herman Lovelace on Dugger route one after a three week illness. Born December 27, 1865 in Sullivan county, she was a Beth el Methodist member and survived by five sons, two daughters, 14 grandchildren, and one great grandchild. The body was taken to Newkirk Funeral home in Pleasantville with funeral plans to be announced Friday.
A question box meeting for Farm Bureau members will be held at 7 pm Monday at the Scotland school with State Representative William Hostettler as moderator. Farmers are invited to discuss state legislation on marketing, co operatives, education, forestry, soil conservation and other topics. Moving pictures will be shown and refreshments served. Henry County commissioners reduced 52 precincts to 40 in a redistricting move. The consolidation aims to prepare for installing voting machines in all precincts before the upcoming elections in New Castle Indiana.
A bar operator in Bernalillo New Mexico was cited for operating on a marriage license rather than a liquor license. County Clerk Johnny Archibeque said the mixup in records existed before taking office and prompted the citation.
A girl named Carolyn Ann was born to Mrs Richard Pickett of Worthington on Wednesday. A boy named Kevin Royal was born today to Mrs Dexter Bays. Miss Marie Rogerson was admitted for treatment. Albert Hoffeditz of Linton route 3 and James A. Shouse of Worthington were discharged. Mrs Claude Corbin and baby were taken home. Grace Deckard of Switch City was dismissed.
Seventeen people were examined at the Diagnostic Chest Clinic of Greene County Tuberculosis Association held in the Clinic Rooms of the Freeman Greene County Hospital. Eight were unable to keep appointments and eleven were x rayed with three sputum exams advised. Seven showed no TB, six were healed inactives, and four needed further study.
The Linton Senators defeated Bloomfield 47 to 44 at the Linton gym in a close game. Murdock Russell and Roll led Linton with 16 14 and 13 points. Osha led Bloomfield with 18 as Osha and Ogle Lester Gainey and O'Brien scored for the visitors.
The U S Naval Ammunition Depot at Crane will raise payroll by 92 611 this year under a new wage scale issued from Washington D C based on a 53 firm survey within 50 miles affecting 1 958 per diem workers across 56 job types. If staff remains the same next year the annual increase would reach 245 544 with first payments on February 27.

Eisenhower announced at a National Press Club luncheon that he will retire as chief of staff at noon Saturday and pursue a vacation before becoming president of Columbia University. The government prepared a nationwide anti inflation plan aimed at guiding housewives on meal planning. Secretary Anderson will detail the program after meetings with produce and consumer group representatives.

Attorney General Tom Clark argued against congressional moves to outlaw the Communist party saying the ban would create martyrs and push Reds underground, making them harder to reach.
President Truman warned Congress must curb inflation to avert an economic crash. He displayed rising cost of living trends and criticized Republican budget cuts while noting the tight current budget. A major grain price drop hit Chicago and other markets, with corn, wheat, oats, and soybeans limit down for a second day.
The wholesale price index for 31 foods in the week ended yesterday fell 3 cents to $7.14, down from $7.17 the prior week and $6.29 a year earlier. Declines were seen in 16% of items, with 4 rising and 11 unchanged, including flour, wheat, corn, oats, barley, beef, hams, lard, sugar, and potatoes.

Indianapolis February 5 motor vehicle bureau officials brace for a rush as 20 days remain before February 29 for 1948 license plates. About 60 percent of Indiana auto owners had not applied, and new drivers licenses are required March 1 for anyone with a birthday January 1 to February 29.
