Indiana officials urge cleaner highways and better driving habits. Albert E. Huber notes traffic signs aid safety and efficiency, calling for early turn signals and brake lights to reduce jams and accidents.
Daily Citizen motor route driver Wm Abercrombie was ill and a substitute attempted delivery. Some stops may be missed. If you do not receive a paper between 6 and 7 p.m. call the Citizen Office at 847 4487.
UPI reports North Vietnam moves supplies into the South at 50 percent higher pace than last year though no major offensive is expected during Tet. A one day cease-fire will be observed by U S and South Vietnamese forces. Viet Cong attacks in Saigon area kill four and wound two. Military sources say troop infiltration decreased from last year while Ho Chi Minh Trail arms flows increased with 15 000 truck movements in December and fuel dumps set up near Quang Binh Province.
Robert L. Weaver announces his candidacy for the Democrat nomination and election as sheriff of Greene County. An Air Force veteran from World War II, he belongs to American Legion Post 22 and VFW Post 7117. He lives on Tenth Street Southwest in Linton with his wife and family. He works for Rice's Home Remodeling Company.
Frank J. Clark, 44, of Indianapolis, died from burns and suffocation when his car burned along Highway 67, two and a half miles north of Worthington in Greene County. Police say a cigarette started the fire after Clark nap while driving. the motor remained running.
The Greene County Soil and Water Conservation District will hold its annual meeting and fish fry on Thursday February 12 at 6 45 p m in the Bloomfield High School cafeteria. Principal speaker Fred Woods of the Soil Conservation Service will discuss watershed work including Boggs Creek West Boggs Creek and Lost River. Woods, a Shoals resident since 1947, has long worked with landowners and NAD Crane public works on erosion control and has spoken across Indiana. Woodruff invites all interested residents to attend.
INDIANAPOLIS UPI State Police Superintendent Robert K Konkle disclosed a plan by leftist groups to drug Governor Whitcomb with LSD at an IU Sesquicentennial banquet in Bloomington. The plot, abandoned for lack of funds, drew vows to warn the public and cited Nixon's Indianapolis visit as a factor.
An Oaktown Indiana couple died and the husband was critically injured in a Monday car truck crash five miles north of Lawrenceville Illinois on Illinois 1. Victims Florence Richardson 77 and Charles Richardson 78. The truck driver William Hendrix son 24 from Vincennes Indiana escaped injury.
A Supreme Court stay delays full redistricting, keeping Indiana's 1970 election on the existing multi district map for now. Officials expect filing opens Feb 24 and anticipate a single member plan later if the court reviews the case. Governor Whitcomb cautiously welcomes the pause amid ongoing legal maneuvering.
Sen Charles Goodell argues Nixon’s Vietnamization may cost 5,000 to 20,000 American lives even if successful. He urges Congress to require a one year troop withdrawal and criticizes the plan as cosmetic. Senate hearings reveal doves vs. Nixon amid tensions.
The UE and IUE conference boards approve a tentative GE settlement, potentially costing GE up to 1 billion dollars. Local 925 IUE in Linton votes 5:30 PM at the National Guard Armory. Some locals already favor, others vote tonight as eight unions follow. Local 320 in Syracuse rejected the proposed settlement in early votes.
Charles F E Bedwell announces his candidacy for Greene County Councilman third district on the Democrat ticket subject to the May primary. He is serving his second term on the council and resides in Wright township.
An Illinois Central freight train struck a car driven by Mrs. Marjorie Gilmore of Bloomfield at South Seminary Street at 8 35 a m causing the vehicle to spin into a signal post. Her 4 year old son James R Gilmore suffered a broken leg and was treated at Freeman Greene County Hospital before transfer to Bloomington Hospital. The engineer Roy P Lankston and brakeman Alan Ayers were aboard. ice and snow reduced visibility though signals at the crossing worked.
Greene County Commissioners met at the courthouse to review a report on Illinois Central railroad bridges in Stockton township. John D. Crooks of Deem Longest and Neff said bridges could be repaired, with a detailed engineering study costing 2400 dollars to determine work and costs. The study was taken under advisement.
A blast destroyed the 11 year old municipal building in Shaker Heights Ohio damaging nearby houses. Fifteen people were injured including five police officers a judge and the clerk of courts. A federal investigator cited a bomb as a possible cause while the police chief warned a gas leak could also explain the explosion.
