Indianapolis, Feb. 2. Democratic National committeeman Frank McHale was accused of being the hidden power behind Indiana liquor laws as the GOP backed a bill to abolish importers, make the liquor commission bi partisan, lift wholesaler limits, and remove the commission from the 1933 act. A final showdown was set as Republicans pushed for the measure despite Democratic opposition and inter party fighting. The House also debated an integrated bar proposal to purge shysters from the legal profession.
Ten Indianapolis freshmen were injured in a chemistry lab blast at Butler University on February 2. The mix of sulfuric acid and potassium permanganate overheated and exploded, spraying glass and acid. Injured were William Stark and nine others, all treated for cuts and burns. Stark suffered severe injuries.
The Linton Miners face Sullivan on Friday in Sullivan and Dugger on Saturday in Dugger. Coach Beasley reshuffles the lineup for the Sullivan game as the team aims to snap a losing streak and avenge a 35 27 New Year tilt to Dugger. Dugger, strong in the Wabash Valley scene, looms as a formidable Saturday opponent, while Sullivan is no easy win.
Mrs. Stanley Klink was dismissed this afternoon from Mary Sherman hospital in Sullivan and returned to her home two miles south of the city. She underwent a serious operation recently and her condition is reported to be satisfactory.
Augustus G Hog roamed outside his den with no sun shining, marking the first sunless Ground Hog Day in years. Local belief links the lack of sun to an earlier arrival of spring and hints that it could come “almost any time now.”
About 50 citizens met with Mayor Lloyd Jones in Bicknell to back legislation regulating strip mining. James Freman of South Linton reported a white Brahma hen became stuck in soft mud while walking in the garden. The feet sank until the mud reached the hen’s breast before a neighbor freed it. the bird recovered with no lasting harm.
Mrs Harry Sparks of Linton rural route sent a letter to the Daily Citizen describing a small pansy garden at her home. She notes a fully developed pansy blossom and that several flowers were picked all winter even when covered with snow.
Mrs. Robert Thompson aged 73 died at 7 oclock last night in the home of her son Ernest in Indianapolis after a Sunday stroke. She was born in Greene county near Solsberry and lived in Bloomfield most of her life. Surviving are five children Irvin Ernest Norman Thompson of Indianapolis Orland Thompson of Topeka Kan Miss Mary Thompson of Bloomington and Mrs Neva Nolan of Bloomington and her husband Robert plus many siblings five grandchildren and many nieces and nephews Funeral services will be at 230 Friday at the Bloomfield Methodist church with burial in Bloomfield Cemetery.
Homer D. Bennett of Dugger route 1 was admitted for treatment for an injury received in a mine. Fred Bellamy of Linton route 2 submitted to a minor operation Wednesday afternoon.
Citizens of Worthington push to finance a new gymnasium with 35 000 dollar bonds toward a 65 000 dollar project. Federal aid funds would cover the balance as the town seeks a recreation hall after students demanded space for basketball and events.
Moscow reports severing formal diplomatic relations with Hungary over its adherence to the anti Communist Axis pact with Germany Italy and Japan. Within a day a Soviet communique said Japanese and Manchukuo forces tried to seize a Soviet island on the Argun river but were repulsed with casualties.
A joint meeting of the Linton B P W club and Rotary club heard Homer Chailleaux of Indianapolis discuss the rise of swastika followers in the United States and the spread of Communism. He described American Legion youth programs and educational patriotic films, with table decor featuring foreign dolls and small American flags. Committees included John Robert Ecker and Miss Margaret Cooper.
J. B. Fauvergue, 71, longtime Linton resident, died Wednesday afternoon in an Anderson hospital after a brief illness while visiting his son Alcide. Born in France, he moved to the United States many years ago and to Linton 35 years ago. He worked in coal mining until retirement about ten years ago. Survived by five children Fortune, Alcide, John, Jule, and Mrs. Catherine Buche, ten grandchildren, one great grandchild, and his wife who died ten years ago. Body to be returned to Linton for services at M. J. Aikin & Son Funeral Home. burial in Fairview Cemetery after arrangements.
Republican members of the Senate Military Affairs committee endorsed selling military planes to any nation that wants them, including dictatorships, while backing a move to open national defense hearings. The plan sparked opposition over fears of entangling the United States in Europe and secrecy about commitments to France and Britain.
Toronto barrister A P William Perkins Bull renounced his claim as residuallegatee to Mrs. May Belle Horlick Sidley's estate while the will was admitted to probate. Probate Judge J Allan Simpson noted the renunciation does not denounce the bequest of 250000 dollars to Bull. An out of court compromise leaves Bull with unrevealed benefits for giving up his one third in the residue valued at four to five million dollars.
Uncle Harry Ebden of Linton collapsed near the Chicago Milwaukee St. Paul and Pacific railroad tracks on South Main street around 1 45 this afternoon. Passersby carried him to Lewis Cline's home and a local physician was summoned. His health had been failing for weeks and his condition remained unreported at press time.
