The Senate Judiciary Committee approved a bill to raise congressmen salaries from 15000 to 22500 and boost pay for federal judges and top officials. Senator Estes Kefauver chairs the subcommittee and targets a Senate vote the week of February 21.
The Indiana House defeated a bill that would have let truant officers arrest pupils on the street or in public places during school hours without warrants. The measure failed 56 to 39 amid concerns over constitutionality raised by Rep. W. O. Hughes.
The Greene County Emergency truck was summoned at 9:55 this morning to 209 Fourth Street Northeast for Otto Hixson who had been ill for months and was having difficulty breathing. He was transported to Freeman Greene County Hospital by resuscitation crew with Linton Police Chief William Coleman City Fireman Jim Schubla and Paul Strietelmeier on scene.
Linton police Chief William Coleman warned parents that ice on local stripper ponds is melting and dangerous. He urged parents to keep children off the ponds to avoid accidents.
The Agriculture Department in Washington trimmed restrictions for the 1955 corn crop and set an allotment of about 49.84 million acres across 21 states with an expected output near 2.2 billion bushels. Indiana received 4.16 million acres in 89 of its 92 counties amid similar easing.
More than two hundred volunteer workers began selling $10 certificates in the Lin ton Stockton consolidated Grade school project. Block captains were named by Parent-Teacher groups to cover city blocks and mile squares. Attorneys say selling 1000 to 1509 certificates should help secure bonds at a lower interest rate. The two week campaign aims to contact every local adult patron with early reports indicating good response.

Defense Secretary Charles E Wilson told Congress to extend the draft for four years as the only way to maintain manpower. He said about 670,000 men would be drafted over four years, averaging 14,000 monthly, in addition to 2.1 million volunteers to sustain 2.85 million armed forces.

The scheme involved outsiders seizing the couple and forcing Denno to aid a gunman through prison gates. The plot, linked to Reader’s Digest killers due for execution February 21, surfaced after inmate tips and handwriting analysis traced notes to condemned men.
Billy Bargar aged 18 of Switz City was sentenced in Greene Circuit Court Bloomfield to one to ten years at the Indiana Reformatory after changing his plea from not guilty to guilty on a vehicle taking charge. He had been charged with stealing an automobile from John Tucker of Linton last November at the Linton General Electric plant.
Lucille Perkins sues Harold Perkins in Greene circuit court at Bloomfield seeking a divorce. The complaint requests dissolution of marriage and related relief from the court.
Moderate temperatures ended a sub zero siege with forecasts for sunny intervals and rising highs across Indiana. Cities reported 41 in Indianapolis 35 in Fort Wayne and 30 in South Bend while snow cover lingered north and light precipitation was expected midweek. State police said roads cleared after severe winter conditions.

AMSTERDAM New York At least 12 people including 11 children died when a brick frame tenement fire raged through the building after an oil stove exploded. Firemen recovered eight bodies by mid morning and police and fire crews searched for missing victims. The tragedy also claimed a Puerto Rican father and five of his children.

Admitted for medical treatment were Sam Stockrahm of Linton route three, Walter Malone of Newberry, and Otto Hixson of Linton. Dismissals include Brenda Stein of Owensburg and Mrs. Ray Alsop of Linton.

Perry Thomas Jack Summerville son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Summerville of Lyons rural route enlisted in the U S Air Force yesterday. He will receive basic training at Lackland Air Force Base San Antonio Texas. Mr Summerville graduated from Lyons High School class of 1953.
The Jasonville Junior High basketball team will oppose the Linton Junior High five at the Linton gym Thursday evening. The Linton squad remains undefeated this season.
Chinese Communist forces attacked Nationalist held Yushan Island and bombed enemy positions north of Tachen. Nationalist Defense Ministry said evacuation of garrison and civilians from Tachens was delayed as the 7th Fleet stood offshore.
