United Press reports a submarine sank the British steamship En dymion sixteen miles off the coast of Spain killing eleven of the fifteen aboard. The loyalist government says a nationalist submarine attacked the vessel sixteen miles south of Cape Tinoso, and four British destroyers began hunting the submarine.
Washington February 1 supporters of the prevailing wage amendment to the housing bill stage a sharper clash while administration leaders push the measure toward a final Senate vote. Senator Royal Copeland argues the amendment is essential to benefit labor as the Senate moves to approve the conference report or send the bill back for revision.

Oral Sullivan, sentenced July 10 1937 by Greene County Circuit Court to one to three years in Indiana State Prison for wife desertion, had parole denied by the state clemency commission. Records show time with other women and risk of abandoning his family. Sullivan sought parole to support his wife and children.
Governor M. Clifford Townsend and department executives ruled that state employes who enter the forthcoming campaign must remove themselves from the state payroll. The edict targets remunerative public office and allows observers to interpret it as permitting workers to hold party posts or run as delegates to the Democratic state convention.
