The announcement details higher air mail rates from five to six cents per ounce for letters up to eight ounces, new air postcards at four cents, changes to third class mail with revised ounce charges, increased regular parcel post local zone rates, higher special delivery fees, and raised money order costs for values up to $2.50 and $100 orders.
Bert Sills, a well known resident, received a scratch near the left eye and minor injuries after being struck by a car driven by Paul Wright on South Main street around 7 30 last night. Linton police exonerated Wright and reported Bert was crossing near the South Standard filling station when hit by the southbound car. Wright and his parents Mr and Mrs Sherman Wright accompanied Bert to a local physician for treatment. The driver said approaching lights prevented him from seeing Bert, who wore an Army over coat.
Pvt. Robert L. Smith of Lin ton rural route 2 returns to Camp Breckenridge Ky after a seven day home furlough. He serves in the 101st Airborne Division and is the son of Mr and Mrs Isom Smith.
Rev. Robert T. Wilson, pastor at Thorn Town Presbyterian, died in a crash on U S 52 near Lebanon with truck driver Keith Trotter of Indianapolis injuring his wife. In Tipton Louise Clements, 24, of Indianapolis was killed when a convertible hit a bridge abutment on U S 31 near here. Holda Gossett, 29, of Indianapolis, driver, was not injured and held on drunken driving charges.
Connersville Indiana December 31 Ronald Sandlin twenty and Omer Rus eighteen both of Laurel were killed yesterday when their car left Indiana 121 and struck a tree south of here. Two other occupants were injured. Bloomington Indiana December 31 Loren Ayres former trooper at the Lafayette Indiana State Police post was named an instructor in Indiana University's Institute of Criminal Investigation. Ayres served with the state police for thirteen years and also works with I Us division university official.
Indianapolis Dec 31 Hoosiers buying new cars after tomorrow will get temporary windshield stickers until the new 1949 license plates are issued. Secretary of State Charles F Fleming said new plates likely begin about Jan 17. The stickers authorize a future plate when issued. The delay stems from the shift from Republican to Democratic administration.
Christmas guests of Mr and Mrs Ed Bane included Mr and Mrs Eugene Craig and daughter Marsha with Granville Edington of Indianapolis, Edmond Edington of Dayton Ohio, Mr and Mrs C L Craw and Clarence Lee and Julia of Jasonville, Mrs Jennie Hunter of Bloomfield, Mr and Mrs Harry Lee Edington and son Dennis Lee of Linton. After noon callers were Mr and Mrs George Eskew.
Tomorrow is moving day at the Greene county courthouse as new officials elected November 2 will be sworn in by County Clerk Frank A. Lenning. New officers include Prosecuting Attorney John A. Brandson, Circuit Court Judge Ed win B. Long, Treasurer Frankie Justus Jr., Sheriff William Branstetter, Coroner Dr. Sam Rotman, Surveyor Lee Richardson, Commissioner Bennie Atto, and John Axe who takes office January 1, 1949.
Indianapolis December 31 The English hotel a historic Indiana landmark stood vacant today as 23 tenants moved out The William E English foundation prepared to sign papers to sell the old building on Monument Circle to Equitable Life Assurance Society for 2100000 expected early next week including a block of shops a theatre and the hotel itself.
Stores in Linton will close at 5 p m today and all day Saturday for New Year’s holiday. A typographical error in a Wednesday notice caused some confusion about the hours.
The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized freight rate hikes of four to six percent, adding about 425 million dollars annually for carriers. The order covers water carriers, forwarders, and railways, with five day notice to take effect. It also permits Railway Express Agency to apply western rates nationwide, boosting its revenue by roughly seven million dollars yearly.

The Indiana Bell Telephone company stated it has not revised its estimate of higher rates. Officials said an average increase of less than fifteen percent in local exchange and Indiana long distance rates will cover expected operating costs and provide a fair return on invested capital.
Reports say Bill Kinnaman of Lyons was injured in an accident at the Smock farm in Switz City today. His condition remains critical despite slight improvement noted.
Washington December 31 The Republican 80th congress convened for its last session as Democrats prepare to take control in the 81st. A GOP revolt to unseat Sen Taft for Lodge Jr. as policy chairman sparked intra party tensions while most members defended the existing program. The new congress opens January 3 with 42 Republicans in the Senate.

Mrs Minnie Weaver mother of Mrs Fern Heenan of Linton is critically ill at Robert Long hospital in Indianapolis, according to word received here.
