Linton City approves waterworks bid and start plan

The Linton City Council accepted the lowest bid of 371 530 09 from Ralph Green Construction Vincennes for waterworks improvements and sending the project to the Indiana State Public Service Commission for approval. They also approved Layne Northern bids for two wells and iron removal plant work totaling 28 900 plus 7 000, with financing planned by revenue bonds.

Navy Plans Atomic Engine for U S Warships

A 70 year old retired railroader, Robert Behnke, is turning an abandoned Soo Line railroad bridge into a house. He bought the 250 foot span and converted it into 30,000 feet of lumber for his new home, keeping the unique structure as the core of the dwelling.

Direct Primary Bill Drafted in Indiana House

Rep. Laurence D. Baker of Kendallville announced a first draft of a direct primary bill. The plan would cover all major state offices and both U S Senate seats, require a 35 percent vote to win, and retain conventions to draft party platforms as a fallback. Masons to Install Officers at Public Meeting

Linton Masonic lodge officers for 1949 will be installed at a public ceremony starting 8:00 p.m. Thursday in the local hall with Clinton Reinties presiding. Linton will close stores banks barber shops and observe post office holiday schedule on Saturday for New Year’s Day. Some stores will stay open Friday until 7 p m and the post office will dispatch going mail with only lock box service to patrons.

Mahlon W. Gilbreath Jr. was named city attorney for Linton by Mayor Grass, succeeding Edwin B. Long who tendered his resignation at the December council meeting. Long becomes Greene County’s judge elect and plans to move to Bloomfield. Lawrence resigns from police to become deputy sheriff of Greene County.

Four killed as B-26 bomber crashes near Detroit

Michigan National Guard officials report four mangled bodies recovered from the wreckage of a B-26 bomber that crashed five miles short of Wayne county airport while returning from a training flight from McDill Field Tampa Florida. Guardsmen and state police search the area for additional possible occupants. The aircraft crashed last night after an instrument approach in windy drizzle.

Missing plane sought as search widens to Cuba coast

A fleet of 43 military planes and civilian craft searched from dawn to dusk for a chartered passenger plane missing over the Caribbean with 30 aboard. The craft, flying from San Juan to New York, carried three American crew members and 27 Puerto Rican passengers. A Boca Chica blimp joined the hunt and the area was extended toward the northern Cuban coast. The pilot Robert Lindquist reported a position about 50 miles south of Miami before vanishing.
