Mrs William Hollars of Bloomfield in satisfactory condition.
A total of 705.08 has been received in the Greene County anti Tuberculosis association sale drive. Readable line items include Bloomfield 117.87 Lewisville and various groups with small gifts such as Masonic lodges Tri Kappa Psi lota Xi Daughters of America five dollars each and community donations from Linton Worthington Scotland Sandborn Switz City and other towns.
Don Marquis the author of Archy the Cockroach Meritable the Cat and the Old Soak died today in New York City at age 59. He had been ill for months and a planned December benefit would have helped ease his sisters $60 000 mortgage and fund his medical care.
Ben Lacer of West Linton announces the birth of a son to his daughter Betty June. The baby weighs ten pounds two ounces and has been named Thomas H. Both mother and child are reported doing nicely.
The 1937 Red Cross roll call in Greene County collected 807.59 dollars. Roll call chairs included Steve Stalcup on the west side of White River and Mrs. Gertie Y. Davis on the east side, with Joseph H. Haseman as county chairman and others handling publicity and treasurership. Totals by townships and towns list Worthington Jasonville Linton and Bloomfield among others with varying sums for annual and sustaining contributions.
Mr and Mrs Hermus Duncan announce the arrival of an eight pound baby girl born December 28. The child is named Sue Ann and both mother and baby are doing well. Mother is formerly Miss Bonnie Schubla of this city. They are staying at the home of Mrs Emery Bellamy in South Linton.
A mail plane crashed in dense fog into Lake Erie near Port Clinton, killing three passengers. Victims are Mrs. Nancy Howard of Lexington Kentucky 45 Albert Anderson 45 of Sandusky Ohio and Adelbert Watkins 30 of New Plymouth Ohio. pilot William Somogey rescued but unconscious after being recovered from the wreckage.
The popular front cabinet led by Premier Camijiehaintemps met in Paris to discuss calling out troops as strikes paralyzed public service. Interior Minister Max Dormoy and Gen George Bourret reviewed measures with the Paris garrison amid about 150 000 workers on strike as transport and municipal workers joined the protest.
In an overtime thriller the Lin ton high school Miners defeated the Bicknell Bulldogs 55 54 to grab their first win in three games. Adkins scored 21 points leading Linton while the Bulldogs relied on long range shooting. The game stayed tight through regulation with Wampler fouling out and the finish decided in overtime.
Stores in Linton will close Saturday for New Year observances along with banks and the post office offering lock box service only. Mail deliveries halt but outgoing mail is sent. Local barber shops keep Friday hours to 8 pm and close New Year’s Day. The Elks host a New Year’s dance with local and visiting performers.
President Roosevelt moving to boost national defense with plans to push rearma ment for American forces at high speed. Congress may be asked to appropriate well over a billion dollars for the 1938 39 fiscal year beginning July 1.
Thirty six men convicted of terrorism and bombing in southern Illinois coal fields prepare to appeal their four year maximum sentences. Most defendants were with the Progressive Miners of America. judge Briggle imposed two years plus $10,000 and one year plus $5,000 on other counts, with sentences to run concurrently. Dr and Mrs Moss and others visited over the holidays.
Pearline Walters four months old daughter of Mr and Mrs Cleo Walters of Paxton died at home Tuesday after a two day pneumonia illness. Survived by parents a twin Evahgene a sister Deloris Dean a half sister Doris Pellens Palmer IL a brother Nathan Paul and grandparents Louis Walters and Robert Robertson. Chinese troops recaptured 16 counties in Shansi province as they push to strike at Japanese lines supporting the drive on Tsingtao. Heavy fighting reported in the Wutai shan mountains with Gen Yen Hsi-shan and Gen Chu Teh coordinating operations against Japan.
Indianapolis December report shows Indiana WPA projects meeting national sponsor contribution averages but urges higher future funding. John K. Jennings says only by securing increased sponsor input can remaining projects finish June 30 1938. District directors are told no relaxation in effort to obtain adequate contributions.
The Linton Rotary club held a noon meeting featuring a supervised inspection tour of Freeman Greene County Hospital led by superintendent Miss Pearl Havill. She guided members through departments explaining hospital operations while a Rotary luncheon was served in the basement.
