Paris dispatch reports France and Japan resisting the Hughes plan for submarine limits while a deadlock threatens disarmament talks. Paris and Washington notes tell of Paris staying firm on 90 000 tons and Tokyo awaiting guidance, complicating committee meetings.
Cairo dispatch reports rioting at Suez Sunday afternoon with several demonstrators killed and a number wounded. Other disturbances noted in Cairo and Port Said after the forcible reaction to events.
British authorities removed Said Zaghoul Pasha and five followers from Cairo to Suez last Friday amid rising nationalist unrest. Cairo riots have claimed twelve lives through Saturday night as police guard streets. In Alexandria, police patrols in armored cars suppress demonstrations and a general strike is expected. The British cruiser Ceres has arrived.
TERRE HAUTE December 27 Official statements on the Kansas mine controversy have been released by the international officers of the United Mine Workers of America and sent to all District 11 locals. The fourteen page pamphlet explains the Kansas field dispute and urges district officers to call off the strike while noting legal questions surrounding collective action and contracts.
Evansville Indiana dispatch notes the Ohio River will keep rising to a crest between 42 and 45 feet by Thursday. Weather observer A L Brand says 45 feet would be four feet below the 1913 flood record, with 39 feet reached yesterday. All tributaries rise rapidly as the river climbs.
Defective wires likely started a Monday fire at Decker & Son store in Brazil Ind causing an estimated $40,000 loss. Fireman Ray Sawyer was injured by falling timbers and taken to Rawley hospital. The fire spread rapidly to A. T. Crabb and Winn & Son stores, destroying entire contents and challenging crews who fought for hours to save adjoining buildings.
Chicago police department figures show burglars safe blowers pickpockets and holdup men earned a total loot of 3,974,526 from January 1 to December 23 1921. Of this sum 686,887 was cash with 1,616,293 in merchandise and 107,199 in cash recovered.
Washington Dec 27 Officials from leading marine transport firms met with the shipping board subsidy committee to review a tentative plan for supporting the American merchant marine. The proposal envisions direct and indirect aid, including a 10 percent customs bonus to US ship operators and a $100 million loan fund, plus actions on taxes, insurance, licensing, and navigation laws to encourage US flag operation. The plan, not yet official, awaits final approval and President Harding’s consideration.

Earle Throst confessed to beating 20 year old Miss Inga Magnuson a Dorchester schoolteacher to death in the Bergren district. Judge H E Taylor set March 9 1922 for the execution after Throst’s December 13 confession in district court.
New York dispatch reports Bishop Alma White of the Pillar of Fire denounces modern female attire as a male driven trend. She claims men's greed and merchant interests push low necklines sleeveless gowns short skirts and gauzy stockings, forcing women half clad in public view and inviting unkind remarks. She says neck and chest exposure serves commercial tricksters and that women had no say in dress length or sleeve choices.
London dispatches report overwhelming Irish support for the peace treaty with about 90 percent in the 26 southern counties wanting ratification. Dail Eireann adjourned to January 3. observers foresee a majority backing the treaty when sessions resume, possibly reducing opposition from Hamon de Valera. The Times correspondent notes County Clare’s council urges abandonment of opposition.
Washington reports the administration may approve a bill to appoint a commission to handle foreign loan refunding and invite American delegates to a general economic conference with other nations. The plan would bar cancellation of principal or interest and consider exchange stabilization and European financing, with location debates between Washington or Europe.
Frank Keeney and Frank Mooney president and secretary treasurer of District 17 United Mine Workers and William Blazzard sub district president surrendered at Huffington and were jailed in Logan County. They were released on $10,000 bail in Charleston after being held on related indictments stemming from the armed march into Logan county last summer.
