Doctors Experiment With Weighty Factors

New York reports on a study by Drs Rosemary Murphy and Karl Shipman testing total fasting as a weight loss method. Five obese women fasted for 3 to 10 days, losing about 19 pounds each, but uric acid rose, suggesting fasting worsens gout risk. A control group of eight women showed normal uric acid with no fasting. The researchers caution against fasting for obese patients with gout history.
