First Indiana Railroads Sparked Brown County Legacy
Brown County’s rail history begins with a horse drawn line near Shelbyville in 1834 and a 1905 crossing milestone. The Indianapolis Southern line reached Brown County’s northwest corner via the Illinois Central route between Indianapolis and Bloomington. The first entry into the county occurred August 7 with an engine and three flats at Fruitdale, greeted by locals. The Madison and Indianapolis line emerged in 1886, reaching Indianapolis by 1849 with strong dividends. By 1886 steam engines appeared in Indiana, and Indianapolis earned the title Railroad City. William Higgins of Madison built the state’s first sleeping cars used in 1868.
