Accidents in State Take Lives of Ten In Weekend Period

Ten people died in Indiana road crashes over a 54 hour weekend. The toll included Indianapolis theater owner George Landidis and his wife Lillian, killed near Mooresville when their car struck a pickup on ice. Also killed were IU coed Roberta Cooper, 19, of Evansville. James Burkhart, 17, of Cutler. Jethroe Greider, 85, of Cromwell. Lance Hostetler, 16, of LaGrange. Philip Hartford, 20, of Aurora. Robert Brang, 56, of Jasper. Morris Trinkle, 37, of Campbellsburg. and Mrs. Eldora Henderson, 70, of Wabash, among others. Police cited others for failure to yield or running stop signs.

Gas heater vent clog blamed for eight ill in Linton

Firemen warn residents to inspect vents on gas space and water heaters after a clogged bathroom grate heater vent sickened eight people Sunday at the Perigo home in Linton. Emergency services responded about midnight. none were hospitalized. Victims include Mr. and Mrs. Roy Perigo, their son Bud, Mrs. Zella Moore, Evajean Walters, Mrs. Juanita Shonk, and Mrs. Violet Ellett.

Two Indiana Schools Put on Probation by IHSAA

The IHSAA placed Bourbon and Hanover on probation until April 1, 1958 for using a player in five periods in one session. Hanover must forfeit a 54-52 win over Du Pont. Bourbon used James Redman for five periods in a game won by Argos 56-43. no forfeiture given.

Rites Conducted For Mrs Maxwell in Spencer

Mrs. Frieda Maxwell 37 of Bloomington died Saturday at Robert Long hospital Indianapolis after a two week illness. She was wife of Paul Maxwell formerly of Linton. Survived by husband four brothers parents at Spencer one step daughter Mrs. Bob Alkire of Linton and step son Kenneth Maxwell in Norfolk Virginia. Funeral services were held at West Funeral home Spencer with burial in Spencer Riverside Cemetery.

Florida imposes seven day embargo on citrus shipments

Lakeland Fla a seven day embargo was placed on all citrus shipments from Florida by the Florida Citrus Commission during the peak Christmas shipping period. The move followed last week's cold wave that sent temperatures below 20 degrees and caused about 50 million dollars in crop damage. Prices for citrus already en route rose and Christmas fruit shortages were anticipated.

Former Fairplay Trustee Dencil R Shepherd Dies at 66

Dencil R. Shepherd 66 retired farmer and former Fairplay township trustee died at 3 15 Sunday at his Bloomfield home. Born December 17 1890 he served 1935 to 1942 and moved to Bloomfield in 1952. Survived by widow Lenora son Clifford two brothers and two grandchildren. Funeral at Prairie Chapel Church with Masonic graveside service.

Linton Man Fined for Expired License on State Road 54

Carl C. Cooksey of Linton was fined five dollars plus costs or twenty dollars and seventy five cents for operating a motor vehicle on state road 54 after his license had expired. The hearing before W. E. Laughlin, Linton Justice of the Peace, followed a charge filed December 3 by State Policeman James O. Smith.

Former Linton Man Fatally Injured in Springfield Accident

Virgil Usrey 67 of Springfield Missouri a former Linton resident was killed in a noon Sunday accident in Springfield Details of the crash were not learned He spent his early life in Linton and was son of Joseph Warren Usrey and Sarah Waggoner Usrey He served as superintendent at Edwardsport generating plant for Public Service Company of Indiana and as district supervisor in Vincennes Later he worked as a superintendent for Missouri Power and Electric starting in 1937 at Willow Springs He is survived by his widow Jessie King Usrey a daughter Mary Louise of California a son Robert Usrey of Gainesville a brother James H Usrey of Linton and a sister Mrs Pearl Sherwood of Knoxville Funeral arrangements had not been completed

Air Force RB66 jet crashes in France killing three

A US Air Force RB66 jet bomber crashed near Chateauroux France killing all three crew members. The aircraft, assigned to the 1st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron at Spangdahlem Germany, disappeared about 4 20 a m near Deols Air Base after departing for Tripoli Libya. Crewmember names withheld until families are notified.

Airplane Crashes Claim Five Lives in Weekend

Five people died in three separate crashes this weekend. In Minnesota near Albern three Hibbing residents were killed when their private plane went down Friday night and bodies found Sunday. Near Fenton Missouri two men, Robert Puccetti and Richard Harness, perished during a test flight. The Air Force aided in locating a chartered twin engine plane from Reno with seven aboard last heard from over Auburn California. Two Sullivan County Prisoners Returned From Escape

Two of four prisoners who escaped from the St. Cloud Reformatory were picked up by Minnesota authorities and moved from the Sullivan County Jail to a waiting limousine. Kenneth Clauson, 21, and Carl M Bishop, 23, from St Paul, were en route to St Cloud with plans to continue to Davenport Iowa and then St Cloud. Two others were captured in Chicago after their auto crashed near Carlisle Indiana. Investigators said Clauson and Bishop claimed they bribed guards for a hacksaw and discussed killing a guard, with Sheriff Harold Conner reporting their statements after arrest. The pair were described as "no trouble" in jail.
