Fire leaves Dugger family of twelve homeless

A kitchen oil stove explosion caused a fire late Saturday night in the Goodman home near the Four Way bridge west of White Rose. The family of twelve, nine at home, lost furniture clothing and bedding. neighbors gathered donations while a new temporary home was found and floor coverings are still needed. The fire response was delayed by a traffic jam and road blockage.

Scotland Resident Hershel Summerville Dies at 53

Scotland resident Hershel Davia Summerville 53 died suddenly at his home at 3 20 Sunday morning. He was born January 6 1902 in Scotland, a WWII veteran and Crane Naval Ammunition Depot employee. He is survived by a widow, mother Leota Summerville, four stepchildren, three stepdaughters, two brothers, three sisters, and is to be buried in Scotland Cemetery after funeral services at Scotland Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon.

Papers Increase Rates by Carrier Nationwide Weekend Rise

American Turncoat Will Be Released From Red China

Richard R. Tenneson, Alden Minn., one of 23 soldiers who refused repatriation, is to be delivered to the Hong Kong border from Red China on Tuesday. British authorities will determine if he forfeits citizenship while the U S consulate plans to interview him en route. American Red Cross representative Richard Tomlin will meet him at the border. Tenneson’s arrival in Hong Kong has been delayed two weeks.

Man Wounds Pair and Is Found Dead in Car

In Greencastle Indiana Eldon Staggs 40 of Clinton Falls shot his cousin Randall Staggs 24 and his wife Sue 25 after a family argument. He later shot himself and was found dead in his car on a country road. Randall and Sue were hospitalized in good condition. Staggs threatened his wife earlier at her home.

Jasonville Man Suffers Hand Loss in Corn Picker Accident

Emery West aged 44 of Jasonville was treated at Freeman Greene County Hospital after a corn picker accident cost him two fingers. Doctors amputated the middle and ring fingers of his right hand after he tried to clear the rollers without stopping the machine.

James Beedle, 80, of Terre Haute, died Saturday after being struck by a car on a city street. Police say Beedle walked in the middle of the road and was hit by the vehicle driven by Herman W. Mason, 52, Indianapolis.

Turner Wins Civil Suit Against Crays for 322.68

Students rescued from cave near IU after rock slide

Three Indiana University students crawled to safety from an abandoned saltpeter cave four miles from campus after a rock slide trapped them 40 feet underground for three hours.
