Local merchants urged customers to shop immediately as 14 shopping days remain before Christmas. Mild weather kept holiday spirit low, merchants warned of a last minute rush to complete gifts.
The Census Bureau reports the United States population at 147 280 000 as of October 1, 1944, up from 133 669 275 on April 1, 1940. The October total includes service members overseas while 146 814 000 are in the United States and about 145 888 000 are civilians.
Capt. Staley H. Bartholomai, 38, of Vincennes, was killed accidentally on Okinawa last Saturday. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bartholomai, were notified. He had served in the Army since 1941 and commanded the 65th Harbor Craft Company. His body will be returned to Vincennes for burial.
Pvt William Bovenschen 35 of Bicknell formerly of Linton killed in action December 25 1944 in Europe. Body to arrive Vincennes this afternoon then to Poindexter and Wampler Funeral Home Bicknell. Services Friday 2 PM at the funeral home with burial in Fairview cemetery Linton. Survived by parents Julius and Mrs Bovenschen of Bicknell two brothers Charles of Chicago Carl of Bicknell. sister Margaret Ann preceded in death.
Worthing ton resident Grover Walters had an appendectomy yesterday. Linton route two resident Charles Mathena was admitted for medical treatment. Rose anna Bingham of Bloomfield welcomed a daughter on Tuesday. Norman Page of Linton celebrated a birth yesterday and they left for home today. James Bemis underwent major surgery today. Mack Gardner of Linton was admitted for medical treatment this morning. Samuel Myers returned home to Bloomfield. Gladys Brewer was discharged to her home in Sandborn.
George Bennett reeled in a 52 pound catfish at Mineral Wells Texas and found inside it a six pound catfish still alive, creating an unusual double catch and local intrigue.
Worthington and Scotland remained unbeaten after decisive wins. Worthington defeated Jasonville 50 to 35 at Worthington while Scotland beat Ep som 68 to 25 at Ep som. Dugger also topped Midland 34 to 28.
Barbara Eagen a blue eyed Indianapolis girl aged 13 missing since Saturday was found in Lafayette Indiana authorities say she ran away and turned herself in. She spent several days with a friend before contacting Lafayette police and was later taken to jail. Her parents feared foul play until the case concluded with the girl safe and returning home.
UK Secretary of State George C. Marshall, 67, underwent kidney surgery to remove a cyst filled kidney. Officials say he may resign if recovery is slow, though he hopes to stay on. President Truman would accept resignation if health worsens. Decision on tenure could wait until mid January.

Charges against 64 year old William J. Powell of Jasonville, filed after a Bloomington radio station dispute, were dismissed. Powell, a former Seventh District Democratic candidate, faced counts of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest, tied to a planned talk on "The Unseen Enemy." The Monroe Circuit Court drop followed the station manager refusing to sign an affidavit. authorities cited Powell’s aim for publicity.
Mr and Mrs Robert Lovelace announce the birth of an eight pound fourteen ounce son Allen Lee born Saturday December 4 at Methodist Hospital Indianapolis Mrs Lovelace formerly Miss Josephine Jackson of Linton Rural Route.
Mrs. Hattie Price Sherwood, 87, longtime Linton resident, died Tuesday night at 210 First Street Northeast after sixteen years of ill health. She helped found the Linton public library and was a charter member of the Bay View club and first Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star. Survived by daughter Edith Hanger, son Elmer W. Sherwood, two sisters, five grandchildren, seven great grandchildren. funeral Thursday at 2 pm at Welch and Cornett Funeral Home with Deaconess Nola D. Yoder officiating.

Checks will be mailed next week and the drive aimed to start next year with a clean slate.
Dee & Ufi-Dale Wann a 43 year old Fountain county farmer in Veedersburg Indiana reported in good condition after cutting off his own left hand with a pocket knife when it became caught in a corn picker on his farm near Kingman. He said he could not get help and walked to his house.
