Freight Rates on Grain Reduced to Aid Agriculture
The Interstate Commerce Commission authorized railroads to cut freight rates on grain and grain products from Chicago and Great Lakes crossings to Atlantic export ports by 74 percent per 100 pounds, with rates possible after ten days’ notice. A 5 cent per 100 pounds cut on edible flour shipments from Buffalo via lake routes was also approved. Witnesses including Secretary Wallace and M. R. Benedict said current high rates curb farming, threaten future production, and push Western farms to grazing unless rates fall.
