United Arab Republic pushes nationalization drive amid seizures
Two years after a wide private sector takeovers, the UAR nationalizes eight contracting and 14 pharmaceutical firms and eyed broader control. Earlier seizures included 400 luxury buildings, mostly in Cairo and Alexandria, sold to government owned insurers. Private sector shrinkage grows under Nasser's socialization policy and the National Charter. If enforced, import permits may be issued only to government bodies, potentially excluding private commerce from foreign trade.
