A baby daughter weighing seven pounds seven ounces was born to Mr. and Mrs. George Beck of Worthington this afternoon. John Geeds of Bloomfield had a minor operation this morning. William Rollins of Fourth Street Southeast was admitted for treatment Saturday. Mrs. Frances Harrell is reported to be improving.
Louisville reports say Dr J W Burn faces a city ordinance violation for not reporting poisoning cases within two hours in Gov Chandler illness matter. Police chief Malley said the warrant was issued after delay in Bryan’s poisoning diagnosis. Barkley leads Chandler in Kentucky Democratic primary returns as tabulation continues.
Arthur Russell a 48 year old WPA worker is jailed in Monroe County after a fight at the Calvin Summitt home two miles west of Bloomington in which Lawrence Bowman 32 was fatally stabbed four times. Bowman a Blooming ton man with a police record attacked the woman and her 14 year old daughter when they answered the door. Bowman died at Bloomington hospital. He is survived by his mother a stepfather three sisters two brothers and a half brother. Police say Bowman had been drinking.
Boots a farm dog saved Mary Hines and Violet Allray from a barnyard cow attack at the Oscar Hines farm near Logansport. The dog rushed the animal, taking a crushing blow but drawing the cow away, allowing the women to escape uninjured despite Boots suffering serious injuries.
Douglas Corrigan leaves Newark for Boston to begin a tour of major U.S. cities. He will be feted in Boston and guest at a Newark Advertising Club luncheon on return. He plans Washington on Wednesday amid crowds and promoters. the famous “wrong way” flier appears weary after a busy New York weekend.
Sullivan municipal golf course players avenged a prior loss by beating a Linton course squad 43 to 44 in a Sullivan area match. Linton's L. Sinders led with 87 and 39 for 79, while several Sullivan golfers posted 77s. The season stands 3 wins and 3 losses for Lintonians.
Linton ministers and their families are invited to a church picnic in the city park on Thursday afternoon and evening. Attendees should meet around 4 p m and bring their own tableware sandwiches and one or two dishes. For more information call Mrs B H Bruner at the Christian parsonage.
Alley Oop and his dinosaur companion were absent from the Citizen office today leaving their usual space empty. The article notes heat may be to blame and expects the cartoon trio to return tomorrow with a reason for the absence.
Funeral services were conducted for Mrs Ellen Rose Howard 89 of Carlisle rural route 2. Born November 10 1852 she died Saturday at her son's home Dr C T Howard in Carlisle. Burial followed at Indian Prairie cemetery. She was a longtime Carlisle resident and a member of Indian Prairie church with the Rose Howard Sunday school class named in her honor. She is survived by her children Dr C T Howard Hudson Howard Grover Howard and Claude Howard six grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral arrangements were handled by Newkirk Funeral Home Pleas antville.
Mrs. Nancy Ann Reintjes died at 2 a m Sunday at the family home on Hooiser Road after an eight week illness from heart disease and complications. She was born March 10 1870 near Pleasantville and lived in the Linton area her entire life. Survived by husband William Reintjes two sons John and Wade and a foster son Virgil Talley. Also five sisters and two brothers and six grandchildren. Funeral at Olive Branch church Tuesday at 2:30 p m with Rev A B Simpson officiating. interment in Fairview cemetery. M J Aikin & Son Funeral Home in charge.
Paul Pete Ferguson of Bloomfield suffered a broken neck in a dive into shallow water and remains in critical condition at Greene County Hospital. Last weekend some improvement had been noted, but his condition has recently worsened.
Fire in the Tonda district of Manila destroyed over a thousand nipa houses leaving eight thousand people homeless as six city blocks burned. Reports from San Pablo in Laguna say more than a thousand similar houses were destroyed, with at least ten thousand left homeless.
The Dionne quintuplets were kept in bed at Dafoe hospital Callander Ontario with a throat infection. Public appearances were cancelled. Father Oliva Dionne worried about Emilie who had not eaten since Saturday. Doctors deem the illness not serious.
Harold Shorty Moore twenty year old son of Charles Moore of Lyons was killed in an automobile accident in North Dakota while returning from harvest work in the northwest. The body was sent to Lyons for funeral arrangements as details remain unsettled. Survived by his father four sisters and one brother.
Linton Miners topple the Dugger Red Sox 4 to 2 on Dugger’s diamond as Chanley hurled and the defense limited errors. The team out hit 9 to 4 and will face the undefeated Clinton Tigers next at City Park, a highly anticipated late summer clash.
Near Corydon Iowa on James Wiseman’s farm a wheat field suddenly gave way trapping a mowing machine and two horses in a 20 foot cavern. Wiseman jumped clear before the machine dropped in. Both horses died instantly. The event stumped local agriculturalists seeking a cause.
The 1:30 pm reading on Linton’s thermometer hit 96 degrees, surpassing all records for the hour in summer 1938. A 93 degree Sunday high also marked the heat. Weather Bureau reports from Indianapolis warn no quick relief, as the region faces lingering high temperatures after recent heavy rainfall.
Detroit dated report details a factional split in the United Auto Workers as four expelled officers led by Richard Frank_ensteen Ed Hall Wyndham Mortimer and George Addes pledge to reform the union They accuse the international executive board of treason and vow to rally rank and file for a special convention amid charges of conspiracy and pro Communist influence The executive board had previously found them guilty of wrecking the union and assailing President Homer Martin in a Moscow inspired factional fight
The Linton fire department was called out three times over the weekend. Saturday afternoon they quelled a gasoline pump fire at Gregg filling station with minor damage. Later that day they prevented a larger blaze at Herschel Stormer’s residence in South Linton. Sunday at 11 o clock they fought a kerosene stove fire at B F Clark’s residence on Second Street Northwest, resulting in only slight damage.
Members of the Service class of the Saron Reformed church will meet at 2 o clock Wednesday afternoon with Mrs. Maud Bredeweg of Fairview road as hostess.
United Press reports 40 hour battle on the Manchukuo Korea Siberia frontier with heavy casualties on both sides. Russians attacked early and were repelled by Japanese bayonet and grenades in no man's land. Foreign office notes no differentiation in losses and Russia rejected ceasefire proposals. Canton then bombed by fifteen Japanese aircraft threatening ten day bombardment.
Mrs. W. E. Laughlin of 409 K street northwest reports a bantam hen laid an egg and then attempted a crow. The first attempts were weak, but the second crow showed surprising bantam masculinity as the hen perched near the nest awaiting further development.
The Baptist Missionary Society meeting at Mrs. Cliff Strong’s home on Fourth Street Northeast was postponed to the first week of September, as announced today.
