Elkin C. Turner will assume duties Saturday as leasee publisher of the Linton Daily Citizen succeeding John A. Watkins whose lease expires today. Watkins leaves after eight years with the paper, five as leasee publisher, with civic work in the Greater Linton club Rotary Greene County Tuberculosis association and American Legion. Turner is a Linton native with prior newspaper experience including work with his father Joe E. Turner on the Citizen and six years as a department manager for the Santa Barbara Daily News.

Insurgent Ship Attacks British Steamer Off Bilbao Coast
In a naval engagement near Bilbao on April 30 the insurgent destroyer Velasco opened fire on the British steamer Wrotham as loyalist airplanes sank the insurgent battleship Espana. Cabo Mayor sighted, rescue by Velasco and fishing boats followed, with casualties undetermined. France and Britain agreed to evacuate civilians from Bilbao, starting with several thousand including many children.

Union reaches tentative pact on most Packard demands

Threatening Notes to Wallis Probed at Monts Chateau
French secret service agents arrived at the Chateau de Cande to inspect threatening letters sent to Mrs. Wallis Simpson. About 20 agents patrolled the grounds and questioned visitors while others hid among hedges and rode bicycles. Hotels within a 20 mile radius were checked for suspicious persons ahead of a possible Duke of Windsor visit.

Edgar Miller 39 formerly of this city died Thursday evening after a short illness. He worked on a WPA project Monday in Sullivan County and was admitted to Mary Sherman hospital where he died about 6 30 p m. Born January 28 1898 in Middlebury Clay County he moved here 34 years ago. Survived by wife Ruth parents Adam and Lou Miller five brothers and one sister. Funeral at 1 30 p m Saturday from South Linton church with burial in Fairview cemetery.

Slot Machine Case Concludes in Bloomfield Area
James Blackmore of Scotland pleaded guilty to operating a slot machine in Bloomfield Indiana. Judge John M Meredith fined him 25 dollars plus 3 dollars costs after a Greene County case was dismissed. Blackmore runs a Scotland store and was arrested in December. Tootie Summerville, a Scotland merchant, was charged but the circuit court affidavit was dismissed.

Experts Testify In Denhardt Case In Kentucky Trial
In New Castle Kentucky April 30 experts testified that the commonwealth'sparaffin tests and ballistics evidence in the Henry H Denhardt murder case were unreliable and inconclusive. Major Seth Wiard testified that Verna Garr Taylor died from a bullet fired at close range from a revolver. Chicago chemist KK O Servberg called paraffin tests valueless under the trial conditions, supporting the defense that Mrs Taylor may have died by self-inflicted action.

Marco Men Plead Guilty In Clover Seed Theft Case
Two Marco men Jim Mowery and Geo Tim Brown pleaded guilty to grand larceny in Greene Circuit Court before Judge J Raymond Powell and were sentenced to 1 to 10 years in Michigan City State Prison. They were also disfranchised for one year. They confessed to stealing several bushels of clover seed from a Marco farm and will be transported to Michigan City tomorrow. Leonard Myers of Marco was questioned on receiving stolen seed and released to go to Freeman Greene County Hospital for emergency surgery.

One Killed and One Injured in Collision With Coal Train
At 3 this morning a car crashed into a coal train on a branch line near state road 54 four miles NW of town. Jesse Bedwell 30 of Sullivan county died from a crushed chest. Cecil Scott 32 survived with serious head injuries and was hospitalized in this city.
