The S.P.E.B.S Q. S.A. chapter led by Joe Branson plans a Sunday afternoon concert at the high school featuring numerous quartets. The event also invites new members for the White River Valley chapter, promoting singing and community involvement.
About 18,000 Gary public school children planned to skip classes for a Freedom Day boycott over de facto segregation. The Civil Rights Coordinating Committee organized 24 Freedom Schools in churches and other sites with curriculum on segregation. Superintendent Lee Gilbert warned absences would not be excused and officials would act under Indiana law. Civic leader Dick Gregory promoted participation urging action to gain access to churches and stores if doors are shut.
Reports say President Charles de Gaulle aged 73 underwent surgery in a Paris hospital after a late speech. Details on the procedure urinary tract or prostate operation remain unconfirmed. A Pompidou spokesman declined to confirm and said he was working in his office.
Cattle sale at Worthington Thursday moved 1,291 head with an average $107 per animal and $19.41 per cwt, grossing $138,120.80. A Monday pig sale saw 1,807 head average $28 per cwt, $16.26 per head, total $30,000. A pig sale is set for May 11 at the Worthington Sales Barn.

A fire at the Linton Red and White food store damaged the ceiling area of the store room at 5 p m Thursday. Boxes of canned goods burned as employees used three extinguishers before the fire department arrived. Cause and damage estimate remain undetermined and the store reopened today.

Linton Justice of the Peace Ellet Mentor reports 13 defendants appeared recently and pled guilty to various charges. East German border forces and West Berlin guards clashed in tense maneuvers around a cross memorial for a slain East German youth. Guards on both sides moved wall sections and cut a rope around the memorial, while Western police shielded the area to avert rioting as Checkpoint Charlie area saw the wall moved closer to West Berlin.
A GE spokesman said a wildcat strike at the Linton plant disrupted the second shift with about two thirds of workers walking out over a motor assembly group placement. All employees reported to work next day and the second shift was expected to be normal tonight.

Iona M. Dickey 46 of Jasonville is in satisfactory condition at Freeman Greene County hospital after a two car crash at 10 15 pm near Jasonville city limits. Jerald L. Griffith 22 of Itasca Illinois and his wife Donna 20 were treated and released at the same hospital. Griffith was driving east on highway 48. The mishap remains under investigation.
The Lyons Town Board reminded residents that dogs running loose will be picked up after April 23. Dogs must be chained or penned if inside town limits, and any found roaming after that date will be captured.
Neighborhood event invites Brownies Junior and Cadet Girl Scouts to Lyons Park from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Each girl pays 10 cents for registration brings a nosetag lunch and a cup for the drink which will be provided.
The Linton Rotary club and local officials announce a week long anti rabies clinic traveling to Sandborn Bloomfield Jasonville Dugger Owensburg and Linton. Clinic times vary by day from 5 30 to 9 00 pm with locations at fire stations and community stations. The program ends April 28 in Owensburg.
Billy Joe Bechtel, 31, Worthington, is held on $2,000 bail on a second degree burglary charge. The charge stems from an alleged April 14 attempted break in at Red's Grocery in Linton. He is held pending further investigation.
