U S Steel Cuts Prices Across Key Products

New York April 13 Substantial reductions in basic selling prices announced by Elbert H Gary head of United States Steel and subsidiaries effective today This marks a drop from 5 to 38 a ton on various products with tin plate down to 125 a ton and steel bars billets plates and wires also reduced many returning to pre 1916 levels despite wage questions remaining unanswered.

New Chief Counsel for Mine Workers Appointed

In Indianapolis on April 13 W N Glasgow Jr of Philadelphia was named chief counsel of the United Mine Workers of America, succeeding Charles Evans Hughes. Glasgow will handle cases of miners officials to be arraigned May 3 in federal court on charges of conspiracy to violate the Sherman anti trust law. Hughes resigned after becoming secretary of state under President Harding.

Capital Prize Robbery Foiled At Illinois Street News Stand

A young man attempted to steal a punch board with 69 dollars and prizes from Thom as Utterback’s cigar and news stand on South Main. Chased by Utterback and Calvin Kendall, he fled west along the Illinois Central track but vanished after leaping from the railroad grade. The board and prizes were recovered intact the next morning. Utterback suspects the thief may live near Dugger.
