A flash fire in a catalytic refining unit at the American Oil Co refinery in Whiting Tuesday killed worker J. C. Burt about 30 Chicago and critically injured John Hendrick also of Chicago. Cause of the fire under investigation.
Three inmates aged 25 are unaccounted for after a Tuesday head count at Indiana State Prison. Officials search the walled facility for Don R. McCall of Lafayette, Larry Kuhn of Muncie, and William J. Cain of Rensselaer amid suspicions they may be hiding inside.
The National Weather Service forecasts continued mild weather with little to no precipitation through Sunday. Daytime highs will be in the 60s and 70s after overnight lows in the 30s and 40s, with Thursday highs ranging from the upper 40s in the north to the lower 60s in the south.
Court to hear Udall challenge to Indiana law requiring 500 signatures in each of 11 districts for primary ballot access. Udall submitted enough total signatures but fell 35 short in the 6th district, prompting a Tuesday court appearance.
Indianapolis man James S. Delp 21 was charged with involuntary manslaughter in the death of his 3 month old son James Jr. Police say the infant died from a head injury after being jerked from a swing. Delp’s father Harold E. Delp 49 later suffered a fatal heart attack at police headquarters.
Area residents complain of Citizen Band radio interference with TV and audio equipment. Some threaten to contact the FCC as the CB craze grows, while others prefer to fix their own receivers. Betty Ford received a temporary 90 day CB license, and Pride Day community cleanup is planned for May 1.
Carter edges Udall in Wisconsin and Jackson takes New York as Ford triumphs in both states. Reagan gains delegates in New York, Udall vows to stay. Carter leads 235 to 169 with Pennsylvania looming on April 27 as candidates press toward July convention.
The Linton Rotary Club sponsors the 17th annual clinic to vaccinate dogs cats and other pets. Four day schedule lists locations in Sandborn Jasonville Bloomfield Dugger Owensburg Switz City and Linton with clinics 6 8 p.m. for a reduced $3 per animal.
Greene County Commissioners set April 25 to May 1 for Operation Pride 76 as part of the Bicentennial effort. Morris L. Cox was named county coordinator and the board urged resident participation. An emergency bridge load issue near Jackson Township was discussed with inspection ordered. The bell and clock at the courthouse were proposed for memorial housing, with work to be evaluated.
Union members and Indiana Constructors, Inc. plan renewed talks at the Airport Holiday Inn in Indianapolis to resolve a wage and benefits stalemate. About 14 000 workers have struck, halting highway, building, sewer, and dam projects as both sides stand roughly ten cents apart on a three year package.
Indiana State Police report 1,011 motorists halted over Sunday and Monday under Project 55 with 344 cited and 667 warned. The initiative targets high traffic areas using radar VAS CAR helicopters and marked and unmarked vehicles as patrols run about 45 days.
Secretary of State Larry Conrad told the Greene County Democratic Women's Club in Linton that bureaucratic blame falls on top level direction and motivation rather than workers. He urged voters to back imaginative leaders and for agencies to ensure instant access and prompt handling of requests. County Democrats including Hubert Lynch and several candidates spoke at the dinner.
