Evolution of the Walker News Through Linn County History

The Walker News began under David Brant in 1883 with Brant as owner and editor for seven years before Charles A. Durno took over and Brant moved to Cedar Rapids to edit the Gazette. Durno sold portions of the business to C. O. and J. Barry in 1891 and 1892, with Durno retiring. The paper later merged into the Marion Sentinel and was phased out, while restoration efforts preserved old Walker copies for the Lions Club. The Linn County Shopper launched August 1965 with Jo Bugg as editor and publisher, later linked to Mid-America Publishing Co., and circulated weekly from Walker Post Office.
