EXPEDITION FROM FORTRESS MONROE SAILS FOR UNKNOWN DESTINATION
A week ago Wednesday an expedition from Fortress Monroe under Gen Butise sailed with two frigates three gun boats and support ships carrying over 100 guns and 4000 men. They attacked Forts Clark and Caswell on North Carolina coast taking 750 prisoners including Commodore Barron. Butler refused surrender terms and Barron agreed to capitulate as prisoners of war. Fort Hatteras viewed as second in importance only to Fortress Monroe.

The Cedar Valley Times reports Judge Lorian’s account of Linn County’s Air Line Railroad subscription. Five percent preliminary survey payments were reduced to two and a half percent for Linn County, with $5,000 insured by Judge Benny and exchanged for railroad land scrip. The balance, $196,000, was held by Rost. Suvrnt to be disclosed as records showed little road progress. After sale to the Bobence Western Company, $195,000 in bonds were returned and cancelled, leaving Linn County paying only interest on $5,000, due 1871. Deeds of land in Monona County are recorded. county interests protected by Judge Ismas and others are praised for mitigating railroad losses compared with other counties.

Dan Rico's Rhinoceros Captured Near City
