General from Massachusetts Aides War and Post Civil War Rise
A long profile traces the early life and career of a Massachusetts native born in 1810 who rises from West Point cadet to Brigadier General and Army of the Potomac commander through Mexican War service at Monterey and Chapultepec to civil war leadership. It notes his injuries at Antietam, promotions to major general and brigadier general, and later service in Virginia. The Philadelphia Ledger then offers a moral anecdote on irritable habits and charitable view of others, urging kindness and restraint.
