The piece reports on a Union Convention gathering at the Court House aimed at selecting delegates for Des Moines. Sausman’s California letter praising Union organization in Los Angeles County and criticizes secessionist tendencies in Linn County.
The Wheeling Convention passed an ordinance to divide Virginia and form a new state named Kenawha by a wide majority. It would consist of eight western counties with a white population of 259 853 and 6 634 slaves according to the last census, resisting forced secession and allowing neighboring counties to join by local vote on a future date.
