A Linn County editorial warns against reckless action amid Civil War tensions, urging reliance on law and patriotism. The Cincinnati Gazette notes Gen Robert McCook's body arrived by the Murfreesboro train and lay at the St Cloud Hotel after his shooting near Selema Alabama. Guerrillas ambushed him in an ambulance, captured escorts, and wounded others on a Decatur road train. Reports claim 200 to 300 guerrillas, with cross ties placed on rails and soldiers burning a nearby house. McCook, from Ohio's noted family, led the 6th Cincinnati German regiment and earned promotion after Mill Spring.
In Virginia a major clash between Union forces led by Banks and Confederate forces under Jackson continued with reinforcements totaling about 13,000 men arriving for the rebels.
