Tragedy at Crossing Claims Burke County Family
A Burke county family of five lost four members in a Monday car train collision near Rutherford College. Sadie Cannon Lair 21 Ed Lair 26 and two children died at the scene, while 4 year old William Howard was injured. The 1936 Ford was struck by Southern Railway No. 12 as it crossed Mineral Springs road. Funeral services were held at Crowe's Funeral Home in Valdes with burial plans pending.

Reward Offered For Morris Body After Lake Hickory Boat Sinks
Edwin Yates Morris a 38 year old Hickory man died when his light outboard overturned near Lakeside Beach. A $100 reward was posted for his recovery as searches continued through Monday night. Miss Elizabeth Helton survived, clinging to the overturned craft until rescue.

Washington May 30 Senator Carter Glass long time lawmaker and father of the Federal Reserve System died early yesterday of heart failure in his Mayflower Hotel apartment. He was 88 and the oldest member of the Senate. Glass served in the House before joining the Cabinet as Secretary of the Treasury and later became a U S Senator, repeatedly reelected through 1949.
