A revival meeting starts Thursday night May 16 at Pisgah Methodist Church with 7 o'clock services each night through the fourth Sunday in May. Rev. W. L. Harkey will preach and music is led by Mr. and Mrs. B. L. Hovis of Wilmington. The invitation is extended to the public.
National effort under UNRRA leadership calls for cash gifts to buy food in bulk and canned goods. A broad interfaith committee led by Henry Wallace promotes donations to relieve hunger in famine areas. Honorary chairs include Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt and Herbert Lehman.
Senator Chan Gurney of South Dakota proposed a thirty day extension to the draft law if the Senate acts on labor control measures promptly. The law expires May 15. President Truman said the draft law was in a bad situation amid the policy dispute. The Post Office banned most parcel post shipments over 14 pounds.
Senator Clyde R. Hoey told Washington reporters the Senate erred in delaying strike curbing legislation prior to the coal strike. He forecast a very strong law soon, stronger than a prestrike bill, as the delay pushes unions to be restrained and prompts passage of tougher measures.
Three Lincolnton teachers Sarah Daniel Sarah Yoder and Brandon McCorkle were inducted into Delta Kappa Gamma at the North Carolina state convention in Southern Pines May 4. Dr Carson Ryan UNC Education head spoke on China and education driven world fellowship at the banquet. State initiates included Miss Carrie L. Broughton and Mrs Inglis Fletcher with Emma Lehman honored by Dr Minnie J. Smith.
New York May 11 report that the Iles D Or archipelago off the French Riviera sees hundreds returning to Sunrise Island Ile Du Levant. Under Dr Andre Durville the population resumes life as postwar naval garrison withdrawn. A diverse mix of English American French Germans Danes and others once lived freely there. Also notes embargoes on parcel post and train service disruptions.
John L. Lewis urges a 12 day truce starting today with 400000 United Mine Workers to return to work if retroactive pay increases are negotiated later. Truman plans a White House meeting and may propose an 18 1/2 cent hourly raise plus a three member health fund commission.
The American Legion recreation committee will sponsor a dance at the Legion Hut Tuesday night May 14 from 8 30 to 12 o'clock. A well known orchestra from Charlotte will play. Invitations are not being issued but all Legionnaires and their friends are cordially invited.
Ocean Beach Service of Fort Lauderdale Florida wins Myrtle Beach license to provide lifeguard and cleanup work on the strand including near the old main pavilion. Dean Conrad says operations start May 15 with four ex service lifeguards Richard Levering Thomas Kirk Frank Cavey and James Barrett.
David Milo Wright Lincoln county's first WWI casualty will have a lasting memorial in the new Pleasant Grove church. The Men s Bible Class room will be named The David Milo Wright class room with an inscribed plaque. The Wright American Legion Post sponsors the memorial and each Legionnaire will donate one dollar.
Veterans in North Carolina may obtain home treatment for service connected disabilities through the new Home Service medical program of the U S Veterans Administration. The Hospital Saving Association based in Chapel Hill will administer the program and assist veterans by forwarding applications to the Regional VA Administration in Winston Salem.
Union Mills in Maiden stayed shut after a six day strike begun last Tuesday morning as workers protested superintendent actions. Only first shift foreman Russell Rogers remains on site as talks with American Yarn and Processing Company in Mt. Holly failed to advance a settlement.
D H Mauney Jr, World War II veteran, was chosen commander of the David Milo Wright Post American Legion at the annual meeting held Friday night. New vice commanders for Lincolnton Ironton Howards Creek North Brook Catawba Springs Pat Goodson were named along with adjutant Harvey Jonas Jr and finance officer Henry W Rudill. Installation will occur at the first July meeting. present commander W Fitzhugh Hoyle presided.
County announces outdoor entrances to the Lincoln courthouse rest rooms on the east and west sides to operate 24 hours for all residents. The Gastonia District Methodist Conference for Lincoln Gaston and Cleveland counties meets May 15 at Rock Springs Camp Ground with Dr. W A Stanbury presiding and speakers Dr Howard P Powell Dr Clovis G Chappell and others.
Cincinnati May 11 Clarence Phillips 49 took his life today after being ordered to move and unable to endure the ordeal. Coroner Frank Coppock said Phillips left a note to his wife admitting the strain of the housing shortage and his decision to leave her alone.
Ralph Houston Laney 18 a seaman second class son of Mr and Mrs M M Laney Lincolnton was assigned to U S S Chumung on April 20 1946. He reported to the vessel from the Naval Training Center Norfolk after entering the Naval Service January 30 1946 and completing recruit training at Norfolk.

D H Buck Mauney Jr announces Lincoln county has already raised the 1500 dollar Cancer Drive quota and notes additional donations to the Cancer Fund are expected. He thanks volunteers and donors for making the campaign a success in Lincolnton and Lincoln county.
Lincolnton Merchants Association will host a free dinner for about eighty members and guests on Monday May 20 at 7:00 p.m. at the North State Hotel. Charles Dudley will speak and oversee officer installations, with Hal Hoyle Jr and A Hal Cornwell arranging.
Charlie Gabriel, noted athlete at Catawba College, elected secretary of the Student Government for 1946 47 term. He is son of Mr and Mrs Paul Gabriel of Boger City and a rising junior at the Salisbury institution.
