Lincoln County residents are urged to submit essays under 300 words to the Lincolnton Chamber of Commerce. The contest closes May 31 with prizes of 10 dollars for first and 5 dollars for second in town and county schools. Teachers are asked to encourage entries and contact the chamber for details.

Homeless Veterans Incorporate For Housing Project

Homeless Veterans Inc in Salt Lake City formed to buy land for a 100 member self funded housing project. Each member contributes 500 dollars with total gifts over 25000 dollars, two 25 acre sites eyed, and supporters from plumbers builders and labor groups. Members may work on site with wages credited to the initial fee.

Demonstration on Freezing Fruits and Vegetables at Courthouse

Whiskey Makers Slash Production To Conserve Grain For Famine Relief

Washington May 6 The nations whiskey makers cut production 40 percent to free grain for famine relief as Agriculture Department limits distillers use in May to three days of capacity. The move delays liquor output but officials warn the world food crisis will persist into 1947. Chairman Davis urged early start on a sound food management program to avert mass hunger in late winter 1947.

100 Year Old Woman Dies at Cliffside

Rutherfordton May 6 Mrs Peggie Scruggs aged 100 widow of James Scruggs died this morning at Cliffside in the home of her son J B Scruggs with whom she lived. Funeral held Friday at 4 p m burial in Scruggs family cemetery. Survived by son 16 grandchildren 43 great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. She was active until a year ago attributing longevity to clean habits exercise and lack of worry.

Letters Misdelivered to Red Cross Recipient

A Marion South Carolina Red Cross secretary received two letters marked for the recipient personally. The letters were for a woman in the service but bore a postmark reading Give to the Red Cross. The secretary questioned the instruction and found the letters unopened and in good order.

Clean Up Campaign Extended Through May 12

Due to bad weather the Lincolnton Clean-Up Week is extended to May 12. Dr. A Wilson chair of the Health and Sanitation Committee urged all citizens to clean premises while city trucks continue assisting. The aim is to curb rubbish to prevent flies and disease.

Durham May 6 officials outlined plans for a large new engineering building at Duke University. The project will be the first step in a multi million dollar campus expansion, to be located on West campus near the chapel and assigned to the College of Engineering under Dean Prof. William H. Hall.

Duplan Corporation Expands Lincolnton Mill and Wilshire Drive

Duplan Corporation announces a 450000 expansion of its Lincolnton spinning mill to house over 200 looms and add fifty jobs. The plan includes a two story 105 by 275 foot building, new yarn prep and weaving capacity, and relocation of the office. The expansion complements a nylon throwing mill project in Winston-Salem to boost overall production.

Tojo and 25 Japanese leaders to face Far East tribunal

Tokyo reports Hideki Tojo and 25 wartime leaders will be arraigned at the Far East international military tribunal for crimes against humanity. Eleven judges from allied nations will preside as Tojo's defense questions the tribunal’s authority. The 55 count indictment may be read in English and Japanese, potentially extending into Saturday. Prosecution led by Chief Kee nan with ten assistants from participating nations.

A nine member civilian panel found Army K P units stocked food excessively with waste and improper handling during the demobilization period. They praised GI bakeries and overall economy of provisions while urging higher pay and better conditions, including an extra dollar daily for K P duty. Doris Franklin Carpenter 57 died Saturday morning in a local hospital after a period of critical illness. Huffman Home Burns At Long Shoals Yesterday

The home of Mr and Mrs George Huffman at Long Shoals was destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. Firefighters could not stop the blaze as it gained headway and only a small amount of furnishings were saved. Origin of the fire undetermined.

Hitler Birthplace Now Relief Center in Braunau

The former Nazi shrine in Braunau Austria is repurposed as a distribution hub for American Army food parcels. It houses the United Nations Displaced Persons Committees aiding released concentration camp personnel and unhomed laborers. The top floors memorialize camp victims with a garrisoned memorial display.
