Christmas season closes with stores, bank, and court house

Lincoln ton prepares for a wartime Christmas with stores busy in a last minute buying spree. The Post Office reports unprecedented mail volume aided by soldier mail. All downtown businesses, the Post Office, the National Bank, and court house offices close Christmas day with the bank also closed Saturday and the court house closing Thursday noon through Monday morning.

Mrs. L. E. Fisher Dies In Asheville

Mrs. L. E. Fisher past president of the North Carolina division of the United Daughters of the Confederacy died in Asheville. Funeral services were held there this afternoon. She was a school mate and friend of Mrs. L. A. Crowell of Lincolnton and known to many in the community who recall her as a guest in the Crowell home.

Burt P. Barlow Dies After Illness at Local Hospital

Lincolnton resident Burt P. Barlow died after a prolonged illness that began last September. He would have turned 74 on Christmas Day. Survived by his wife Lena Stutts, a son Burt P. Barlow Jr. stationed at Camp Pickett, Virginia, and three daughters Vivian Lackey of Baltimore, E L Meggs of Charlotte, and Jean Barlow of Lincolnton. Funeral held Saturday at 2:30 pm at home, Rev. Jones Bags Record-Size Hoot Owl in Lincolnton

Walter Clarence Jones of Lincolnton Route 2 shot a giant hoot owl with a .22 rifle while hunting hawks. The bird measured a 43 inch wing span, claimed to be among the largest ever seen. Jones planned to stuff the owl as a souvenir after showing it to friends in town.
