Morganton December 15. Paul M. Dale 88 former Burke county sheriff for four years and W Illurn Wilson deputy were arrested on bond warrants issued by Judge Zeb V Nettles at the end of a two day probe into crime conditions Judge Nettles charged them with irregularities nonfeasance and conspiracy to violate liquor and slot machine laws and set bond at 250000 each for the February term He directed Solicitor L S Spurling to investigate a second marriage allegation against Dale and present if evidence suffices to the grand jury Dale ended his term last week after a defeat for re election Wilson a farmer from Icard township was Dale’s first deputy

In a Commons statement Prime Minister Churchill said Britain had only 100 tanks on June 11 1940 facing invasion after France fell. He noted tanks then were ill suited to anti tank guns but that by autumn 1941 Britain had 400 and now possesses 1 000 to 2 000. He praised later models and hinted at new air weapons against submarines.

Postmaster W N Fair says Lincolnton Post Office will stay open Saturday afternoon until 6 to aid last minute mail. Lincolnton stores close two days for Christmas, with the Merchants Association announcing coin day and the following Saturday off. Broom Sentenced to Life for Double Shooting
J Walter Broom age 66 was given a life term for the July fatal shooting of Mrs Ruby Middlebrook and 30 years for the death of his daughter Mrs Eula Harkey. He pled guilty to accessory before the fact in Middlebrook death and second degree murder in Harkey killing. Earlier trials had led to a death sentence overturned by the state supreme court.

American Air Corps Captain Walter Clark Back From War Mission
Captain Walter Clark, United States Army Air Corps, returned home on furlough after a six day flight from Cairo to Egypt and battle missions over Ploesti Romania. He piloted a B 24 in the June 12 1942 raid, facing Messerschmitts and anti aircraft fire, with seven crew members, no casualties, and a fifteen hour round trip.
