Washington reports the body of Secretary of War George H. Dern returned to Utah via a black shrouded special train after funeral services in which leaders from many nations honored him. Army officers, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt, the cabinet, and foreign diplomats attended. The Rev. Russell J. Two Killed by Lightning in North Carolina Thunderstorm
In Gastonia, Joe Jacobs, 31, received a two year county jail term for the death of 16 year old Albert Harrison after his car struck the bicyclist on Wilkerson Boulevard near Cramerton. Also jailed for two years each are John Blackwood, 19, and Bee Webb for the death of 16 year old Hazel Farner in Cramerton. A separate tragedy in Cleveland County claimed Monroe Willis, 59, and Mrs. Marshal Brittain, 20, killed by a lightning strike at a Flay home amid a damaging storm. a double funeral was held for the victims.

W M McLoud 53 superintendent of Rhyne Houser Mills Cherryville and Abernethy Houser Mills Statesville was killed in a highway collision near Laurinburg Saturday. Mrs Annie Black Price injured with a broken arm and thigh Charles Bullard of Scotland county bruised. McLoud dies ten minutes after hospital transport. He was active in civic religious and social life in Cherryville. Funeral services planned in Cherryville today.
