Raymond Moody aged 27 of Concord North Carolina drowned while swimming in an unprotected area at Myrtle Beach South Carolina. His body washed ashore about 30 minutes later 500 yards down the shore.

Public hanging of Rainey Bethea watched by 10000 in Owensboro
In Owensboro Kentucky a public hanging was held for Rainey Bethea a 22 year old Black man accused in a brutal assault and murder. A crowd of about 10000 observed as the trap at Daviess county’s pit and gallows released him to death. Witnesses reported jeers and cheers while officials conducted the ceremony. Bethea who converted to Catholicism before execution left a note to his sister saying he was saved. He was buried in a pauper’s grave after services at St Stephen’s church.
