Lincolnton Firemen Return From State Meet

Lincolnton firemen returned from Raleigh where they attended the annual state convention and the final program events. Gibsonville won the chemical championship with a 745 second clocking and Badin led the water division with a 1015 second hydrant hookup. Sanford and Albemarle also placed in the chemical and water competitions among ten teams.

After four weeks of publication property will be sold on the first Monday in September. 895 names are listed and advertising costs total 107.40 dollars at 12 cents per name. Concord Youth Drowns at Myrtle Beach

Raymond Moody aged 27 of Concord North Carolina drowned while swimming in an unprotected area at Myrtle Beach South Carolina. His body washed ashore about 30 minutes later 500 yards down the shore.

Public hanging of Rainey Bethea watched by 10000 in Owensboro

In Owensboro Kentucky a public hanging was held for Rainey Bethea a 22 year old Black man accused in a brutal assault and murder. A crowd of about 10000 observed as the trap at Daviess county’s pit and gallows released him to death. Witnesses reported jeers and cheers while officials conducted the ceremony. Bethea who converted to Catholicism before execution left a note to his sister saying he was saved. He was buried in a pauper’s grave after services at St Stephen’s church.

Pittsburg Woman Visits Mrs. Brown

Mrs. L. Gerald Firth of Pittsburg Pennsylvania spent the summer at Blowing Rock with her two daughters and their governess. She is the daughter of General Robert D Johnston who served the Confederate army. The Firth party were guests of Mrs. George A Brown during their visit.
