Washington projects a fiscal year ending July 1 with a deficit near 1.75 billion dollars. The national debt rises past 21.3 billion, with June adding about half a billion. Revenue declines and tax rules shift to cover the gap as deficits widen amid war debt concerns.
The Annual Methodist Conference in Dubuque attended by over six hundred delegates, including pastors and lay leaders, voted to shift the conference to fall. The gathering featured Bishop Leete, a large procession marking the church centennial, and ordinations.
Freeman Fitzgerald, born in Nova Scotia, died June 24, 1523, near Lime Springs Iowa. He married Anna Bell Sigman in 1887 and farmed near Britt before relocating to near Chester and Lime Springs. Survived by wife, seven children and eight grandchildren. funeral at Presbyterian Church with interment at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Card of Thanks notes thanks to friends and neighbors for kindness during illness and death.
The Howard County Rural Mail Carriers Association and Ladies Auxiliary concluded their annual meeting at Brown's Park Lime Springs on Thursday evening June 15. G D Eston Cresco was elected president succeeding FE Bateman Creston who completed nine years. Bateman was named vice president. Roesler Lime Springs elected secretary. Mrs FE Bateman Cresco elected president of the auxiliary. Mrs Hr Hastings Chester elected secretary. Mr and Mrs Reinbart Elma named delegates to the state convention at Fairmont July 2. Mr and Mrs Rate ming chosen alternates. Next year's meeting planned for Chester.
Preston Republicans report a new erosion control camp to open Friday June 23 with 200 young men from Ft. Des Moines arriving. Chatfield camp to open tomorrow. Daily routine starts at 9 30 a m and runs eight hours a day for five days a week with three hours daily for recreation.
At 2:00 nom in the evening the ora torio The Prodigal Son by Sir Arthur Sullivan was presented by St Luke's choir with orchestra led by Dr Leslie Arnold of Chicago. The performance drew a large crowd to a noble rendition and a grand finale. The bishop read appointments after. Rev Wehard Preacoty was appointed to Lime Springs for the sixth year. Attendees included Fey Myre Re Prescott Vera Esther Mouw and W O Davis, who returned Monday evening.
Fourteen Lime Springs business places join in a free auction on July 22 where goods are paid with Auction Money issued free up to purchase value. Bidding starts this Saturday. shoppers clip merchant ads in page 5 to receive one auction dollar per storefront.
A house in Lime Springs was struck by lightning Saturday morning during a storm. Three people indoors escaped injury though Leonard Welchen, a hired hand, was stunned and knocked to a bed by the bolt. The lightning damaged siding, windows, and a floor while traveling from the chimney through a closet to the cellar.
In Ottumwa a single day saw a birth and a litter: a woman bore an heir a cat kittens and a dog pups. The family reports their white mouse joined a strange self huddle, producing ratlets afterward.
A fifty year old barn on the Allgust Monthly west farm is being repaired as men reinforce the foundation wall. The structure remains sound with large, knot-free timbers up to forty feet long, pegged with wooden joints and described as marvels of size and smoothness.

The D. J. Nagel descendants gathered for their annual reunion on Friday June 16 at Silver Bank Park. Ninety two family members from four branches shared a bountiful dinner and an impromptu program of music and recitations. Eldest present was the Nagel matriarch in the second generation, while Dickie Nagel, six months old, was the youngest in the fourth generation. Attendees traveling from distances included Mr and Mrs Deucios Martin Lake Mills Iowa and Mr and Mrs Paul Nagel Cresco Iowa. Also present were Jean and Terene Gillette Mankato and Rey and Ars D J Nagel Hammond Minnesota. Committee in charge for the 1934 reunion were F W Ramaker Edd Mensink Idan Soland and Mrs Lee Nagel.
Harmony News reports Granger will observe Independence Day with forenoon exercises at Floreheeville Park featuring kittenball games among teams from Preston Cresco Drietel Kendall ie Ponytown and Granger foot races a bowery dance at night and free lemonade at noon. Stores in Lime Springs will close after 9 30 a m on July 4 with a federal holiday on the following day.
John C. Mills was fined 16 and Judge Peterson deferred sentence until morning after a jury found him guilty of making a false return to dodge a 1833 tax cost. The same courthouse heard L S Relnera's plea in the shooting of Deputy Sheriff Al Morem, leading to an indeterminate 1 to 5 year term. Relnera remained in custody as he awaited transfer to St Cloud reformatory.
The Presbyterian Synod of Lime Springs convened at Lake Crystal Minnesota in June 2023. The Missionary Society met Tuesday afternoon and the Tuesday evening service was led by the moderator. Holy Communion was administered with Rev W E Evans presiding. The Analness Session met Wednesday morning and the Missionary Meeting Wednesday evening was led by Mrs Morris H Jones Lime Springs with readings by Mrs R Lewis Jones Lime Springs and Mrs William E Evans Mankato. Rev H C Griffith spoke on The Harvest to White. Devotionals were led by Mrs T ty Hughes Le Sener Minnesota. Wednesday afternoon marked the 75th Anniversary of the Synod with speakers Morris Jones Lime Springs Owen W Rowlands Aberdeen D D and Caradog Jones Jerusalem Minnesota. Public services Thursday included 10 00 a m Dero Jonels led by Mr Robert I Jones Mankato and sermons by Revs R Lewis Jones Jim Springs and William E Evans D Mankato followed by 2 00 p m devotionals led by Dr Johns Minnesota and sermons by Revs Hoch Rowlands New Ulm and Hugh Owens Waukeota Wisconsin. 7 30 p m devotionals led by M.
Three men died when a plane crashed at Cresco field Sunday evening. Pilot Allen T. Rideost, 24, of Charles City. Dernard Steebel, 35, of Cresco. and Alvin Welnaar, 30, of Cresco, perished after the aircraft stalled and spiraled from low altitude. The crash occurred at the Cresco airfield. Rideost’s brother-in-law had died in a Lime Springs portable mill accident months earlier.
Over a hundred guests gathered June 23 at Mr and Mrs Werley Jones home to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. Seventeen attended the original wedding or shower twenty five years ago. FR L Jones presided and spoke. Miss Aang Mae Davis sang I Love You Truly. Mrs Larson and Mrs East read poetry. A large wedding cake was cut and lunch served for about 120. A purse of twenty five dollars, a silver vase and a set of silver forks were among gifts from friends.
The conference near Dubuque closes Sunday evening with few district changes. G J Chalke remains district superintendent. Prescott returns to Ains Springs, Schepelita to Cheater, Mitchell to Creaco, Saubach to Decorah, Buck to Elma, Darien back to New Hampton.
H Jones, Lime Springa, and preachers Reva E Edwin Jones D D Columbus Ohio and Hugh C Griffith Columbus Wis attended morning services with Mrs R Lewis Jones and Tom E Price rendering a bust and Tom Price singing at the evening service. The church was filled to capacity at all services. The next Synod is set for Mankato in June 1934.
