Bass Season Opens And 4-H Leaders Elected

Dorothy Goeders of Palo Alto county will head Iowa 4-H girls for the coming year after installation at the twelfth annual 4-H girls convention at Iowa State College. Officers include Prandle Holschlag vice president and Margaret Vigars secretary treasurer, with Jane Blythe historian. Awards were given for outstanding home economics records to Helen Creger and Vivian Obrecht. Delegates totaled about 1700 with larger crowds at Ames for the outdoor music festival. Howard County attendees returned home with plans to share knowledge at next meetings, while Miss Jes­sie Parker urged the State Superintendent to address the County Superintendents Conference in Des Moines.

1940 Auto License Plates Bright Orange and Blue

Howard county issued 1940 motor vehicle plates to the county treasurer with 3800 auto plates and 526 truck licenses produced at Anamosa reformatory. The year features bright orange plates with blue numerals and will not go on sale yet. John H. Stewart announced tenant purchase loans totaling 108166.50 for the year ending July 1st, financing twelve farms at 9013.87 each.

Opening bass season yields few big catches

The bass fishing season began last Thursday with early anglers failing to report sizable catches. On Friday expert Charlie Hartung returned with three smallmouth bass, the largest at 2 lbs 13 oz and another near 2½ lbs. Spence Mayo added two fish on Sunday, an 18 inch smallmouth weighing 2 lbs and another 15 inch. The heaviest so far is Reuben Staplecamp’s 4 lb 21 inch largemouth from the Upper Iowa River, his only bite.

Drivers Slow in Purchases New Licenses in Howard County

Cresco Plain Dealer reports nearly 3000 people in Howard County failed to renew drivers licenses this year based on applications in the sheriff's office.
