Evening Crowd Largest At Old Settlers Picnic

Evening crowds at Chester Old Settlers celebration surged to large proportions despite a chilly morning. Daytime attendance lagged, but a warm afternoon brought farmers out as the parade started late and the speaking program was postponed from 11 16 to 1 10. The Lime Springs band opened, Rev. Zimmerman gave the invocation, and Chris Plummer introduced Cedar Rapids speaker Elmer A. Johnson who urged remembering forefathers and criticized old age pensions as he reflected on freedoms and the nation.

Willard Earl Houston died Sunday morning near Lime Springs. Funeral held Wednesday at Larson funeral chapel, Lime Springs. Burial at Pleasant Hill cemetery. He was 62, born Sept. 7, 1819 in Morrison Illinois. Parents Robert and Katie Houston. Sister Mrs Nellie Houston Van de Mark of Tampa Florida.

Bernard Hughes Flies Over Lime Springs

Lt. R Berard Hughes, Air Corps instructor at Eads Oklahoma, piloted a two man plane over Lime Springs Saturday evening at about seven. The stunt drew crowds and speculation if Bernard was at the controls, with routes over his sister Cynthia’s home in Waterloo and a stop in Des Moines after visiting Minneapolis and Webster Hughes.

Farmers urged to turn in scrap rubber drive

Howard county farmers were urged by USDA War Board chairman Joseph Hatlestad to collect every ounce of scrap rubber and deliver it to the nearest filling station as part of a nationwide drive. Major Clyde L. Jones Promoted to Major in U S Army

Camp Fire Playlet and Musical Program at Lime Springs
