Iowa's Better Groomed 4-H Girl Chosen At State Convention

Julie Roberson of Elma tops a group of thirty four from north 13 counties as Iowa’s better groomed 4-H girl at the State Convention on the Iowa State University campus June 7-10. She earns a chance to be one of fifteen delegates to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago in December.

New Shallow Oil Well On Niewald Farm

Oil is pumped from a new shallow well on the George Niewald farm south of Davis Corners with 67 to 95 percent oil and water. Hans Jesperson of H & L Oil Co Omaha reports drilling and indicates potential for deeper finds. a second well is planned to the west on Chester Rouchau’s leased land. Production of steel is expected to dip.

Neighbors Help Plant 95 Acres in Virgil Lewis Farm Work

Neighbors from Saratoga assisted the Virgil Lewis family on Friday and Saturday with 95 acres plowed and 40 acres planted in corn while starting soybeans. Local residents provided tractors, discs, plows, fertilizer, meals, and cooking staff to support the effort and Vernon Stockdale organized the event. Mr Lewis, recently visiting Des Moines Veterans Hospital for thyroid disorder treatment, is expected back in July for further care.

Anna Haslam Eggerichs Dies At 76 In Etna Area

Anna Haslam Eggerichs died June 8 1960 at 76 after a long Etna life. Born November 16 1883 in Bloomfield Township near Etna she attended Etna and Spring Valley schools. She married Harden Eggerichs August 10 1910 and lived on a farm near Etna for 45 years. Surviving son Dale Chester Iowa daughter Babina Kappers Etna and five grandchildren. She served as treasurer of the Etna Cemetery Board. Funeral Saturday at Cherry Grove Evangelical United Brethren Church with Rev R S Heitke. interment Etna Cemetery. Two Farm Youths In Tractor Mishaps Chronicle

Denelda Christian and Mike Heressi, both teens from Minnesota farms, were injured in separate tractor incidents Tuesday morning. Denelda, 13, was pinned by a leaking gasoline barrel during a disc pickup near Le Roy and rushed to hospital with possible back injuries and rib fractures. Mike, 17, suffered bruises after his tractor overturned into a ditch near Saratoga while en route to fetch a cultivator.

Linda Rice and Karen Hustad were runners-up in the Cresco Miss contest held Saturday. Judith Friedhof won Miss Cresco of 1960 and will compete in Miss Iowa at Clear Lake. Dulce Grube named Miss Congenial. 12 Howard County girls competed with formats, swimsuits and talent judged. First prize a $100 scholarship and $50 wardrobe. runners-up $25 wardrobe. all winners trophies.

News announces the birth of Daniel Lee Barker a 6 pound 12 ounce son born June 2 to Mr and Mrs Bil Barker of Winona and Donna June a 6 pound 14 ounce daughter born June 6 to Mr and Mrs Willian DeJoode of Dakota City Iowa formerly Lime Springs. Mrs DeJoode is Lois Brockmeyer. Also reported is the death of Mrs Rennie Exbom formerly Gladys Burns Horton in Huntington Park California from a heart attack with funeral in Southgate California. She is survived by husband Mr Exbom a daughter Mrs Everett Nelson and two sisters. David Mason had his glasses broken while playing ball yesterday morning and was taken to a Rochester hospital.
