The 1962 Howard County Fair runs Thursday July 26 through Sunday July 28 with a redesigned midway north of the exposition building. New gates, reduced parking congestion, enhanced seating to 4000, and the largest carnival in twenty years promise more attractions never before seen locally.
Dave Mason earned the Eagle Scout rank at a Court of Honor held at The Methodist Church last Wednesday evening. Rev. Hiess opened with invocation, Rev. Ackerson led a community sing, and Tom Daly presented awards. Tenderfoot pins went to Francis Mertens Raymond Van Dyke and Ronald Cassidy. Second Class pins were awarded to Timmy Rapp Donald Robinson Jerry Hirsch Jimmy Hughes and Kenny Peters. Mason earned 22 merit badges, one more than required, as James Langridge of the Wapsipinicon council presented the Eagle insignia with Roger Mason pinning the medal and Mrs Mason receiving a Mother’s award. Refreshments followed hosted by scouts’ mothers.
Linda Jean Rice and Michael Robert Greenfield exchanged vows at 2 30 p m Saturday in Lime Springs Methodist Church. Rev Merilin Ackerson officiated with Donna Rice as bridesmaid and Howard Norman as best man. The couple will reside in Iowa City after a reception. Rice and Greenfield both have connections to Iowa universities. Also noted are softball game results from Lime Springs with Tuchek s defeating Lime Springs 5 1 and Ridgeway beating Lime Springs Comets 16 5.
Mrs Josephine Landholt of Elma resigns from the Howard Winne district Board of Education at a regular meeting held June 11. No replacement appointed yet. vacancy to be filled until the next election in September. Landholt family moving to Des Moines.
Mr and Mrs John Loquias of Owatonna Minnesota welcome a son born Sunday June 3. The infant weighed 4 pounds 3 ounces. Mrs Loquias formerly Martha Stevens of Bonair.
The Cresco Saddle Club held a Sunday trail ride starting at noon with a pot-luck at Old Town Park. More than 60 riders from Le Roy Harmony Minn Lawler Cresco Chester and Lime Springs rode east along the Upper Iowa River to Big Springs and back.
Mrs Edna Louise Mahoney dies of a heart attack at a Rock Springs Wyoming bus depot while en route to visit her daughter in California Funeral services are set for Friday at 2 00 p m at First Presbyterian Church Le Roy Minnesota Reviewal of the body is Friday morning at Martz Funeral Home and one hour before the service at the church Also noted is the earlier death of her husband Arthur Mahoney a former Lime Springs plumber who died May 20 1941.
Lime Springs swimming pool opened yesterday marking the season start. Lessons begin next week with posted schedules at the pool. Season tickets cost 12.50 for families. A new Drive-Ins Stand near completion with equipment for root beer, ice cream, and cooking being installed. Suzanne Roberson reported to the Farm Bureau board on the National Youthpower Congress in Chicago, detailing Howard County representation and related sessions. Dairy Princess Sally Sikkink was crowned Fillmore County Dairy Princess at Dairy Day 1962, with attendants JoAnne Young and Sarah Larson.
Martin Jones 75 died June 7 1962 after a lingering illness at New Hampton Hospital Funeral services were held June 9 at Zachow Funeral Chapel Rev Merlin Ackerson officiated with organist Mrs Abner Buresh and soloist Mrs Carl Cassidy Burial was at Pleasant Hill Cemetery Pallbearers were Roy Jones Eugene Jones Vernon Jacobson Clair Campbell Jim Shoemaker and Ben Davis Jr Jones son of Vic and Ella B Jones was born June 2 1887 in Howard County Iowa He married Gertrude Stebbins January 15 1912 and had Eva Mrs James Randall New Stanton Iowa and Stanley of Chicago Illinois He was survived by four grandchildren and six step grandchildren two sisters Harriet Mrs Harry Wrohman and Libby Mrs J G Sewell and four brothers Ed Ryce Wilbur Tom.
A 42 year teaching career ends as Clara Parchman dismisses her Cresco West ward third grade class in retirement to pursue time for new activities. She began teaching in 1915 in rural schools near Lime Springs, later taught in Clarksville Brooklyn and Tipton, and returned to Cresco to care for her mother before resuming in Howard county and joining Howard Winneshiek Community schools. Her longest tenure was 18 years in Tipton and arithmetic was her favorite subject.
