Friday Close Methodist Bible School Ends

The Vacation Bible School themed Jesus, the Promised Savior, runs June 1 to 12 from 9 to 11 each morning and closes tomorrow at 10 30 with a program for parents and friends. Teachers include Lyle Stevenson, Kathy Jones, Dianne Miles, Walter Harwood, Dale Reis, and Raymond Gasser. assistants are Judy Gassett, Lynda McCaustland, Ann Vander Bie, Karen Mensink, Janet Harwood, Linda Hansen, and Marilyn Jones. Mrs Steve Hughes led crafts for grades 5 through 8. Mrs Eddie Hughes directed music with Bonnie Hartung on piano. Suzanne Williams filled in for Bonnie after an arm injury.

Youth Center Building Nears Final Construction at Fairgrounds

Howard County Youth Center project moves toward completion with $6,000 raised toward a $14,000 cost. Contributions from Cresco businessmen, rural residents, and local groups total near $5,940. Volunteers will soon roof and side the 50 by 148 foot structure to host fair exhibits and 4-H activities in July and a planned fall fundraising drive.

Stock Car Races At Fairrounds Feature Second Night

The first stock car program at Howard County Fairgrounds on a new 38 mile track drew 2300 fans. Purse totaled 940 dollars for drivers. Due to demand, a second race night is set for Saturday at 8:30 with likely double the entries.

Collision South of Chester Injures Two Passengers

On Sunday June 7 1964 at about 7 am a two car crash on highway 63 near the Chester railroad crossing injured two passengers. Ferdinand F Stahlhut 55 of La Porte City Iowa drove a 1964 Oldsmobile and Francis E Smith 23 of Lime Springs drove a 1957 Chevrolet. David Souhrada a passenger in the Smith car sustained minor injuries and Mrs Stahlhut was bruised after being thrown from the vehicle. Sheriff Percy Haven investigated the incident.

Passing Attempt Is Cause of Collision South of Davis Corners

At about 5 p.m. Sunday June 7 1964 on highway 63 two southbound cars collided when a following vehicle attempting to pass Eva Randall’s car forced Kenneth M. Nehl’s 1957 Mercury to pull onto the shoulder and back onto the highway. Leon T. Linthacum’s 1963 Chevrolet was sideswiped. no injuries. Linthacum's damage about 350 dollars, Nehl's about 200. Eva Randall's car was not involved. Sheriff Percy Haven investigated.

Mrs Kenneth Larson born Jennie Elizabeth Smith Aug 20 1898 Mt Carroll Illinois later lived in South Dakota and Chester Iowa. She married Kenneth Larson Sept 24 1924 and had two sons Charles and Stanley. Surviving husband two sons three grandchildren and her mother and siblings.
