A nostalgia piece recalls the Chautauqua circuit in Lime Springs with a week of tent shows on the school yard. Lecturers, singers, and a peppermint aroma science moment entertained both children and adults in a bygone summer, along with traveling staff arranging morning sessions for local youth and a Loyalty song that framed future citizenship.
Rev R Lewis Jones writes from Bryn Y Mor Caernarvon sharing Welsh American ties in Caernarvon and Patagonia. He notes Memorial Day, graduates, visitors from Massachusetts and Ohio, preaching, lecturing on the USA, and plans to attend the Royal National Eisteddfod in August plus a Scotland trip. He reflects on America and Viet Nam and mentions Caernarvon Royal Borough status and Prince of Wales investiture history.
Seventeen of the twenty five graduates attended a reunion and picnic Sunday at the Legion Hall after a plan change from Lidtke Park due to cool weather. Attendees included numerous LSHS veterans and spouses from Ames Mason City Dubuque Rochester Minneapolis and more with reminiscences and photos shared.
David L. Mick of Iowa State University will lead a rootworm training at the Stanley Tusler farm near Osage on June 17 at 3 30 p m. Farmers will learn to identify corn rootworm damage and control options including organophosphorus insecticides to be applied before month end.
Fifty-one youths from St Pauls Lutheran Church attend Vacation Bible School from Monday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily with a closing program Friday June 11 at 8 p.m. Themed God's Children Pray, activities include Bible study film strips music and crafts. Teachers for each department are listed and refreshments provided by church women. potluck dinner to follow with ladies invited to bring covered dishes.
Mr and Mrs James Hoverman of Cedar Rapids welcome Carol Anne born May 15 weighing 5 lbs 10 oz. Grandparents are Kenneth Murphy Chester Gary Hoverman Alta Vista. Wykoff High School held Baccalaureate services May 30 led by Rev Walter Wyncoop and commencement June 4 with Donald A Harkcom delivering the address. Susan Scheer is valedictorian with 94.05 four year average. Charles Backman salutatorian at 93.75. Other graduates named with honors include Theresa Brown Rodney Grabau Ann Brown Diana Jeche and Donna Jeche among a 31 member class.
The Legion Auxiliary ran Poppy Day sales on May 28 and 29 with Mrs. Bob Maurer in Chester in charge. A poppy queen from Chester and Lime Springs was crowned, Marcia Wyatt and Terri Munkel earning queen titles for high sales. Sandra Barclay won a prize for near top sales while Wayne Hughes was awarded a gift for top sales among boys. thanks extended to all helpers and especially Mrs. Maurer.
