Beardsley Leads Beating Blue in 1948 Primary Race

Beardsley defeats Governor Blue in Reynolds County primary by a wide margin to secure Republican nomination for governor. Beardsley 189,864 votes to Blue 125,985, with Switzer as Democratic challenger in the general election. Local races include Buresh defeating Richmond for State Representative and Nagel beating Kubik for Supervisor. Several county offices have no opposition. Rural fire truck levy passes in seven Howard County townships. Election returns list winners for U S Senate Governor and other state offices, plus county tickets and graduations at Wartburg College. Ice cream social announced by Bethany Circle for town hall event June 11.

Senior Junior Banquet at Methodist Church

On May 28 eleven seniors and ten juniors with Supt and Mrs Collins walked from the schoolhouse to the Methodist Church for a three course dinner by the Ladies of WSCA. The church basement resembled an Old Fashioned Garden with flowers, candles and rose shaped programs. Sophomore boys Earl Orum Howard Ludens Burton Nagel Pawan Ferkingstad served as waiters. a short program followed.

Rev Paul Pease 70 Dies at Sumner

Funeral services were held May 29 at the Sumner Methodist church for Rev Paul Pease retired minister who died May 27 after a 14 month illness. Burial was in Grand View Cemetery Fayette. Pease, born July 20 1878 in Lynxville Wisconsin, served pastorates in multiple Iowa towns and was a Spanish American War veteran and a Mason for forty years. He is survived by his wife two daughters a granddaughter a brother and a sister.

Joe Sindelar Burned by Hot Radiator Water

Joe Sindelar Jr. suffered severe scalding injuries from hot radiator water while operating a tractor eight miles west of Lime Springs. He removed the radiator cap when the cooling fan broke, water sprayed him in the face chest arms and hands. He received treatment from Dr. Buresh and was hospitalized in Cresco. discharged Monday.

Brainerd Youth Enlists for Airplane and Engine Mechanics School

Pfc. Lloyd Thas, 19, son of Mr and Mrs Herman F Inns of Brainerd Minnesota Route 5A, has reported to Keesler Field Mississippi for training in the Airplane and Engine Mechanics School. The course, about 12 weeks, covers aircraft electrical systems engine operations fuel and oil systems propellers structures instruments and inspection. Training will qualify him to perform maintenance on all general type aircraft flown by the USAF.

Chester parsonage dedicated by joint Lutheran service

A joint service by Bethlehem Chester and Sadersdal congregations on June 6 1948 marked the dedication of the Chester parsonage on the church lawn. Rev C Austinson Janesville Wis preached a morning message on moral character and community stability. Rev C C A Jensen Northfield Minn urged rejoicing in faith as Rev Austinson was honored with the dedication. The gathering, aided by Ladies Aids, read greetings from Dr Nils Kleven and benefited from Eckstein Radio and Television Co loaned equipment.

Old Settlers Picnic at Chester Saturday

Chester residents prepare for the annual Old Settlers Picnic with a 10 30 a m concert by the Elma Band. A full day of entertainment for all includes prize stunts for ages 6 to 17, four rides, various stalls, and a Community Hall dance in the evening.

Car theft arrest ties to Kensett recovery of Dickinson

Arthur W. Dickinson, 29, of Waterloo, was arrested Saturday in Kensett after occupying the liming 1948 Ford owned by J. Ryce Jones of Lime Springs. The car had vanished from the Jones meat market rear Wednesday night. Dickinson, an itinerant salesman, was bound over to the district court September 7 for grand jury on a charge of larceny of a motor vehicle.

Full Legion Celebration Program Set for Lime Springs

Lime Springs to host a two day Legion Celebration July 2 and 3 with the Lime Springs Band providing entertainment and a dance both evenings. A softball tournament features 4 to 6 teams and street sports offer cash prizes. H R Gross speaks Saturday July 3 afternoon. An amusement company mal rides and concessions with local food and bingo options. Donations fund Legion lighted ball field equipment with $400 in prizes to be awarded July 2 and 3.

Weed Spraying Show Draws Large Four-County Crowd

More than 1050 people attended a four county Pest Control Field Day at the Howard County Experimental Farm on June 2. Dr E P Sylvester and Dr Harold Gunderson spoke on weed control and corn borer management. Twenty exhibitors demonstrated spray equipment including an airplane and a dusting machine.

Obituary of William H Frost 1863 1948 Lime Springs Iowa

William H Frost aged 85 died at his Lime Springs home after a long life that began in Devonshire England on April 2 1863. He came to the United States in 1870, worked as a restaurant operator and cream hauler, married Alice Winegar in 1898, and leaves his widow a son and a daughter along with two brothers and a sister. Funeral services were held at Lime Springs Methodist Church with burial at Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Card of thanks from the Frost family expresses gratitude for support after his death.

Greenleafton church contract awarded for new 70 by 110 foot structure

Vic Wubbels of Preston wins the bid to build Greenleafton Reformed church. The plan calls for a T shaped building with full basement and kitchen, auditorium and stage. Porch and exterior brick walls planned, footings and basement walls under construction this summer. Drilled well on site and electric service in operation. concrete work to proceed as forms are built. Meanwhile local baseball and softball scores show Granier hosting Lime Springs Friday with 8:30 p.m. start and Preston beating Harmony in recent play.
