27 Milwaukee Cars Derailed Near Castalia in Midwest Train Crash

A Milwaukee meat train derailed about four miles east of Castalia around 4 am Friday, spilling 27 cars and halting traffic to Lime Springs. No injuries, but hogs and cattle were killed or set loose. Five hog cars and two cattle cars were loaded, with rest carrying meat. Telegraph lines were severed, and traffic was rerouted via Chicago Great Western from Dubuque to New Hampton. It is believed a broken rail caused the crash.

Brakeman Killed As Freight Trains Collide

Two Milwaukee freight trains collided near Monona Iowa early Wednesday. Brakeman R F Hambright of Austin Minnesota died crushed under a coal car. Engineer Rakow and fireman Harrington injured. Regular freight partly sidetracked and projected onto the main line. Third local train accident since September reported in the area.

High School Tops Alumni in Two Games

Lime Springs High School defeated the Alumni 42-38 in the boys game and the girls team won 32-23. Alumni girls featured Geralda Murphy, Or ene Garrison, Norene McCaistland, Phyllis Johnson, Luella Meyer, Elaine Munkel, and Geneva Roesler. Alumni boys included Dick Nagel, Gene Jones, Harold Munkel, Lawrence Munkel, Junior McCaustland, John A. Williams, Bill Jones, Pete Garrison, and Harley Van Dyke. Ed Ferkingstad led the High School boys in scoring.
