Afton No 4 Tops County In Rural Fire Contest 1946
Afton No 4 was named the high point school in Howard County after the 1946 Annual Iowa Rural Fire Prevention contest. They will represent the county in the state meet after finishing fourth in 1945. Of 30 local schools, Afton No 4 scored first for 97 farm inspections and 261 hazards found, and 54 hazards eliminated. New Oregon No 7 placed second with 41 inspections, 181 hazards found and 83 removed, while Darrow School Albion was third with 38 inspections, 110 hazards reported and 54 eliminated. LaVonne Roethler of Afton No 4 led county scoring with 33 inspections, followed by Jackie Henry of New Oregon 3 with 2 inspections. Mrs Wilde Middlebrook of Darrow reported the high scoring low extra fire prevention activity.

Poultry Appreciation Meeting Highlights Health and Fun
The Lime Springs Chick Hatchery sponsored a Poultry Appreciation meeting at the Legion Hall in Lime Springs last week. Poultry Specialists from Hilltop Laboratories Minneapolis presented a program on poultry health and disease prevention, illustrated by a Hilltop Highlights film. Attendees enjoyed a short film Three Brains in the Woods about three bears and friends in the wild.
