Mrs Minnie Wilken Dies in Cresco at 84

Obituary note for Mrs Minnie Wilken 84 died at Cresco home of her daughter. Service held at Schacht home and Saint Matthews Lutheran Church Granger with Rev Boese. Burial at Saint Matthews Cemetery. Born 1888 in Ostfriesland Germany she immigrated with husband Johan Wilken and raised eight children across Illinois South Dakota and Iowa. Survived by eight children thirteen grandchildren seven great grandchildren and many relatives. Card of thanks from the children.

The Bernards, famed comedy duo, star in Republic’s new film Gobs and Gals showing next Tuesday and Wednesday December 16 and 17 at Lime Theatre. They perform two on screen numbers a spoof of the William Tell Overture and a Malden from Ball piece. Cathy Downs and Bob Hutton lead in romantic roles in Gibs and Gals, touted as the Laffineat Hit of the Year.

Hearing set January 21 on Milwaukee Road trains

The Minnesota Railroad and Warehouse Commission schedules a 10:30 a.m. hearing January 21 at Austin City Hall on Milwaukee Road’s request to discontinue passenger trains No 103 and No 122 between Austin and the Iowa line. The railroad argues operating costs exceed revenue. Iowa PSC recently granted permission to discontinue the same trains between the Iowa Minnesota border and Carrier Iowa.

Howard County extension reports three local growers approved to plant the new Cuintafee oat for 1953. The hybrid, cross of reselect Clinton and Santa Fe, is rust resistant to crown rusts No 45 and 7. Extension specialist Ed Dyas spoke at the Osage district oat grower meeting. Dr Arden Sherf of Iowa State urged Buckthorn removal to reduce rust impact. Growers named are Charles L. Vrba of New Oregon Mathias Matzen of Riceville and Robert K. Evans of Lime Springs.

R. K. Jones Elected Head of Lime Springs Club

The Lime Springs Community Club held its annual meeting at the Methodist Church with about 47 members present. R. Kenneth Jones was elected president for the year. three directors for two years were Rev H. H. Adie, Ray Nauman, and Peter Kemmer. Geneva Garrison hosted the Oneota Club Christmas gathering with 19 members and one guest attending. After a dinner by the committee, a business meeting and Christmas quotations were shared, a donation was given to Care instead of gifts, Beth Sparks led a lesson on The Charm of the Christmas Story, and the evening ended with Christmas carols and thanks to the hostess and committee.
