Howard County road program funds for 1965 outlined

An estimated 281000 will be spent in Howard County 1965 on road projects with 101000 for grading. Ten miles of paving planned five miles Hew 8 to Schley and five miles north of Elma to Hy 9 financed by farm to market funds. Local funds cover Cresco area blacktop and grading on 10 miles of county and farm to market roads. Seven badge replacements and 1964 works noted.

Reopening of Insurance Plan For Disabled Vets

Disabled veterans receiving VA compensation will get an explanation of the limited reopening of National Service Life Insurance with October checks. An application form will arrive before May 1, 1965, but no new applications may be made before that date. Eligibility targets veterans who served after October 7, 1940 and before January 1, 1957 with service connected disabilities, in two groups: those in good health meeting standards, or those whose disabilities prevent meeting health standards.

Severe Cold and Snow Showers Hit Roads This Week

The area endured subfreezing temperatures around minus eleven with a swing to about twenty degrees above. Snow showers added on Tuesday while Friday’s freezing mist left highways icy and ditches clogged with vehicles. Blacktop remained especially slick through the weekend.

Archer Takes Fine Buck Near Decorah After Hunt

Dale Reis a Lime Springs barber and archer, felled a large buck near Decorah on Wedees day November 18. The deer field dressed at 226 pounds. The kill site was a quarter mile from the nearest road, requiring help from other archers to carry out the animal. Earlier he also took a doe in Minnesota under state licenses.
