Golden Wedding Honors for Schoppers in Greenleafton

Mr and Mrs Henry Schoppers celebrated their sixty sixth wedding anniversary at Greenleafton Church on November 26 with all five living children present and a large gathering of grandchildren and relatives from Iowa Minnesota and South Dakota. The couple who married January 3 1900 have long served their church and community and will celebrate Henry’s upcoming 81st birthday.

George W Hughes of Portland Oregon reports a successful elk and deer hunt with Paul Markworth and George Stone near JElem OQuzon. They killed four elk and one deer including two bull elk and a cow. The meat quality is praised by Hughes.

Annual 4 H Mixer Party to honor 1949 achievers

The county 4 H mixer honoring Howard County club girls and boys for 1949 achievement will be held Saturday evening December 3 at Cresco High School Auditorium. P N Payne announces 15 girls and 12 boys will receive recognition and long-time records. State 4 H office approved several merit and achievement awards for top poultry, clothing, and project records across Cresco, Lime Springs, Protivin, Chester, Riceville, and Elma, with a recreational program supervised by county officers.

Community Club Dinner Features Wild Duck

A Community Club dinner is planned for Wednesday December 7 at 6 30 PM at St Paul Lutheran Church. Bethany Circle will feature wild duck as the main dish and tickets are to be sold by local businesspeople. A business meeting and officer election will follow the dinner.

Lime Springs Plans Three Holiday Trade Events

Lime Springs and the Community Club announce three Christmas Trade Days for Saturdays December 10 17 and 24 The Lime Theater will show a Free Show for Ruddies on Dec 10 Santa Claus visits Dec 24 with children treats and free merchandise prizes plus $100 trade tickets. Ruddies residents and shoppers can begin collecting tickets with purchases in town this Saturday.

Berlin Airlift Medal Honors Vern Van Dyke

Sgt Vern E Van Dyke of the 16th Constabulary Squadron in Berlin received the Berlin Airlift Device for participation in the airlift that fed thousands in the Soviet blockade. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Harry Van Dyke Lime Springs Iowa and husband of Stella Van Dyke. The award complements the Army of Occupation Medal and marks his role in the historic operation. The piece also notes community church activities in Lime Springs with holiday gatherings and slides shown by local organizers.

Community CROP drive raises funds in Forest City Township

About 65 persons or family groups joined the recent CROP drive in Forest City Township. Rey Leroy E Bauman, township chairman, reports $15 200 in cash and six bushels of corn pledged. Donations will be sent to county offices to augment the county total. corn will be called for and resold to swell the local tally. Donors will receive thank you notes and receipts in the coming days.

Family Living Crafts Series Planned at Cresco Library

The Women’s program at Howard County launches a second Family Living series on metal work and textile painting led by Cresco librarian June Cook. Attendees should bring hammer, shears, tin strips and cloth for painting to the Cresco Public Library auditorium. The first leaders series on Busy Day Meals by Miss Jewel Graham drew good attendance, with plans for a Vegetable and Small Fruit Growing session in January and a Tailoring Workshop in February. Oneota Club Meets and Local Notices from Lime Springs

The Oneota Club gathered at Mrs Claude Collins home with thirteen members responding to roll call. New member Mrs Thomas B Lindsay welcomed. Plans discussed for the December 13 Christ May party and gift exchange. Mrs Claude Collins read a poetry paper by Mrs Nelle Jones. Lunch served by hostesses. Also notes include Lime Springs Methodist Church repairs by Peterson Plumbing and copper refiners, and an auction sale by Wm Yost near Lime Springs with clerk from Exchange State Bank and auctioneer Paul Newhouse. Yost plans to move to Forest City with family after sale.
